Brown's first novel was a satire of New Deal bureaucracy, but it was not published due to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. A few months after its publication, he was drafted into the . Army where he met Martin Schmitt, with whom he collaborated on several works after the war. During the war, Brown worked for the United States Department of War as a librarian and never went overseas.

His first book, Wave High the Banner (1942), was a novel based on the life of Davy Crockett. Subsequent books dealt almost exclusively with the Old West, with many delving into the untold stories of Native American tribes and their histories. Though he wrote or contributed to over twenty-five books-two of which won awards from the Western Writers of America-his crowning achievement is generally considered Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. Brown, who continued writing into his nineties, died in 2002 at the age of ninety-four.
