Affinity is the work of an intense and atmospheric imagination. Sarah Waters is such an interesting writer, a kind of feminist Dickens' Fiona Pitt-Kethley, Daily Telegraph. Set in and around the women's prison at Milbank in the 1870s, Affinity is an eerie and utterly compelling ghost story, a complex and intriguing literary mystery and a poignant love story with an unexpected twist in the tale.

Sara Waters never allows us to become attached to her protagonists. I find that very different to read since I usually like to project myself in their stead. But it makes you like a detective. Looking over their shoulder struggling to see the truth that the author is keeping from us both. I read this book during my lunch breaks, waiting in line...simply to pass the time. I never wanted to leave it, but I never wanted to pick up if I had more fanciful things to do. It is a slow burn that way and strangely binding, but the final hour of reading brings satisfaction. ALL IN ALL WHAT THE HECK SARA WATERS WHY YOU DO THIS TO ME. I DON'T REALLY LIKE IT BUT I KEEP COMING BACK FOR MORE??

Sarah Waters is a technical excellent writer, and in this book, as in her others, her command of language, mood, setting, etc. are superb. She also did extensive research about Millbank, the 19th century English prison where this story is set. Unfortunately for the reader, Ms. Waters was so in love with her research that she was determined to include every last bit of it in this book, at the expense of the narrative and tension. We gets little bits and pieces of the story, and then pages and pages describing in painstaking detail facts that have nothing whatsoever to do with the story and do not advance the plot — for example, detailed expositions of the process for bringing in new prisoners, and of the infirmary, and of the procedure for visitors, and of the kitchen, and even what the inmates wore, every layer down to the skin. The reader quite loses track of the story line in between these many digressions. Had I been interested in reading Bout the British prison system, this information would have been fascinating, but in a piece of fiction it dilutes the story considerably.

I plowed my way through this very sad and morose novel. I had read Sarah's novels, The Paying Guests and Fingersmith, and loved them both. But this one just didn't grab me. Possibly because the main character was portrayed as such a weak person. Her letters/writings were whiney and repetitive- I just didn't know how many of those I could read. Of course the ending was no surprise. I apologize for giving a terrific writer a bad review. Just so depressing!

I don't want to say too much about this book because I don't want to take anything away from the experience of reading it. It touched me in ways no other book really has. I think about it often. It's gut wrenching and honest and beautifully written from the first word to the last. A true masterpiece. Read it.

I loved Little Stranger, so I was slightly less amazed with Affinity. The story is fascinating -- a young woman known for her powers as a medium is imprisoned for her role in a woman's death. The main character, a "lady," (rather than the commoners in the prison), volunteers to help at the prison and becomes rather obsessed with the young woman. Of course, there are lots of layers to these characters and their stories -- I am oversimplifying here -- and the ending packs a punch! Probably the best ending I've read in years!! But the dark tone got to me after a while -- the descriptions of the horrible, bleak prison and the main characters' engulfing depression really wore me down. Other readers may not feel the same way. But, overall, this was a good read and extremely well written.
Captain America
I first got to know Sarah Waters writing through "Tipping The Velvet." I instantly fell in love with her style and superb command of language and character development, so I was very excited to read this novel. This is far less bawdy and erotic than the previous story, but that didn't bother me; In fact it made me appreciate her as an author even more. She has great range as a storyteller, and doesn't rely upon shocking eroticism to snare her readers. This was a very haunting, sad sort of novel about a very lonely woman who is trying to find something worth living for after the death of her father. She seeks out purpose in the miserable ranks of women in prison, and thinks she may have found it in a strange yet alluring female inmate. I won't go any further than that with the plot because it is far too intricately woven for me to summarize without giving too much away. Overall, a very captivating read that left me thinking about the story for days after. Highly recommend this as well as any other of her work. I, personally, cannot wait to read more of Ms. Waters' fantastic stories.

Wow. This novel drew me in from the start. I found it difficult to put down and Waters maintained that grip until the very end. The setting (Millbank Prison) was skillfully written so the reader experienced the horrors through the eyes of protagonist, Margaret Prior. I enjoyed Waters knowledge of Victorian Spiritualism. SPOILER ALERT - I hoped for a different outcome simply because the ending broke my heart for these characters. Well written. Wonderfully researched. A MUST READ for anyone interested in the mysterious world of Victorian Spiritualism, the brutality of 19th century prisons, and a lesbian woman struggling to find love in a time when such things were taboo. Loved it. I'll definitely read more books by the amazingly talented Sarah Waters.
I simply loved "Tipping the Velvet" written by this author so I decided to try "Affinity". Not sure what to think -- except it is one strange tale! The lesbian overtones were terribly subtle. In fact, it is possible that if you did not know in advance about that fact you would not suspect. I thought the story dragged a bit but I perservered as I was simply too curious about the ending. I won't give it away - but let's just say that it was just a tad predictable - and then again, perhaps not. This book left me a bit puzzled and a little disappointed as well. I give it four stars for being well written - 3.5 would have been my overall rating. Not high up on my list of favorites but I guess it was interesting enough. Would I read another from this author? Probably - because of her other book "Tipping the Velvet".
