I loved these short stories. Blue Feather was different in that it was about Indians and that gave it a different aspect from other Zane Grey stories. The last one about the Haunted Asp Cabin was also incredibly unique in that it was written from Grey's perspective and was truly a "haunted" story.

I loved these short stories. Most of it involved people that weren't as good as they could be - they weren't even striving towards it. This is different from most Grey novels I've read in which the hero and heroine are both very g I loved these short stories

My father loved Zane Grey and I just wanted to see how good he was with Amerindian fiction. I couldn't get into it so donated it to the public library.

The listing calls this a hardback book, but as I write this review I am looking at my copy of Blue Feather, Manor Books 95369 and it is a massmarket paperback. As far as I know Manor only did paperbacks while in business. So....Zane Grey had an affinity for the Indian race and culture, being 1/16th Indian himself. And I am sure when Louisa Wetherill finally told Zane Grey this story which she had learned from the Navajos after having ran the trading post on the reservation, he knew he had to put it down on paper. It is a tale of long, long ago when the different clans or families of tribes were in constant war, and mysticism played an even more important part in their daily lives than later on. This is also the story of a warrior who, for the love of a princess, was willing to betray his people for this young woman. I'll not spoil the ending by telling you how it comes out; but in the process of his decision there is great visual descriptions of the land and the symbolism the Indians see in the land and in nature. As a bonus, included are facimiles of Zane Grey's hand written manuscript and 28 illustrations by Frederick Remmington. It's different Zane Grey; it's a short novel and in those he wrote in greater depth about his characters than in the longer novels. It's one not to miss, if you don't have it.

This compilation first published by Harpers more than 20 years after Zane Grey died, is no reflection on the quality of the three stories in it. Blue Feather is Zane Grey's telling of an Indian myth told to him after making friends with the people who ran a trading post on the Indian reservation--the Wetherills. It took him many years to learn this story, just as it took him many years to learn other true stories he related in his books, such as the Graham-Tewksberry Feud in Arizona which he made into the novel, To the Last Man. The title story, Blue Feather, is a warrior chief who must decide between his duty and his love of a princess when war breaks out between two tribes. The Horse Thief is as advertised, except Dale Brittenham didn't steal any horse. And Quaking Asp Cabin is a first person account of Zane Grey spending a night in an abandoned log cabin which spurs his imagination to a tragedy of many years before. Here are three stories of passion and intrigue and bold undertaking true to the American West as Zane Grey knew it to be. I recommend it highly. And if this is truely a first Harpers printing it is worth more than the asking price.
