Sara Levine has a VOICE and a POINT OF VIEW and they are great and exciting and I want to read other things that she writes, absolutely. Narrated by one of the most charismatically irritating Treasure Island!!! is a book a person should reserve judging until they’ve read to the bitter very end. My opinion wavered back and forth several times over the course of its 177 pages, but by the time I had finished I realized that author Sara Levine had done something really calculated and unique.

Treasure Island!!!, Sara Levine’s first novel, warrants its punctuation. It is hard to change a life, and Levine accurately portrays what happens when someone stirs up the secrets and lies we are often content to live with. Her narrator is not necessarily a sympathetic character.

I liked her instantly, even though her tattoo alarmed me: a mermaid stabbing herself with Neptune’s fork. Patty had gone out for more cigarettes e liked to read. Road and Track, the magazine. There was a long pause in which she drank her beer, and I drank my water, both of us gazing at Richard, whose cage I had placed on the floor. Nice bird, she said at last. Thank you. He’s supposed to be a helpmate, but he’s more of a talisman for my journey towards bolder selfhood. I got him after I read Treasure Island.

Sara Levine teaches at the Art Institute of Chicago. Treasure Island is a poorly written book with poor character development and a plot that goes nowhere. She won a 2008 Bridport Prize for Fiction, a Special Mention in The Pushcart Anthology, and three citations in The Best American Essays.

At age twenty-five, you can’t read a rip-roaring book like Treasure Island and not feel adventure tug on your hand, even if your hand is firmly planted in your pocket, fingering a pigment-dense tube of lip gloss. You waken to the possibilities of bravery and you chafe a good deal at that thing other people call security.

When a college graduate with a history of hapless jobs (ice cream scooper; gift wrapper; laziest ever part-time clerk at The Pet Library) reads Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island, she is dumbstruck by the timid design of her life. When had she ever dreamed a scheme? When had she ever done a foolish, overbold act? When had she ever, like Jim Hawkins, broke from her friends, raced for the beach, stolen a boat, killed a man, and eliminated an obstacle that stood in the way of her getting a hunk of gold? Convinced that Stevenson's book is cosmically intended for her, she redesigns her life according to its Core Values: boldness, resolution, independence and horn-blowing. Accompanied by her mother, her sister, and a hostile Amazon parrot that refuses to follow the script, our heroine embarks on a domestic adventure more frightening than anything she'd originally planned. Treasure Island!!! is the story of a ferocious obsession, told by an original voice-intelligent, perverse, relentlessly self- extricating, and funny.

My objection to this book is not a reflection on the obvious talent of its author but on how it was misrepresented here at Amazon. The description I read made it seem as though the story was a fun adventure, at times poignant, but always exciting. Instead, what it actually is about is the journey of the main character from self-cluelessness to self-awareness - and the people she hurts in the process. To that extent, it's very well written and I give Ms. Levine a lot of credit for pulling off having the narrator be the very person making the journey, and not having the entire story end up parodying itself. So if you're into stories about personal struggles and dysfunctional family dynamics, I highly recommend this book. If, like me, you're looking for escapist entertainment, keep looking; this is not the story for you.

This is a hilarious, witty, sophisticated, and also deeply sad novel. The narrative voice is brilliant and Levine gives readers just enough clues to piece together what's really going on, despite the unreliable (and at least slightly unbalanced) tour guide she gives us. The discrepancy between the narrator's narcissistic vision of her world and what the reader can infer is really going on creates a really compelling tension that pulls the reader through the narrative at a lightning-fast pace. And somehow, despite the narrator's delusion, narcissism, and pathological manipulation, Levine managed to cast her in a charming and empathetic light. Bravo, Sara Levine!

PS: Any violence toward humans and animals that takes place in this novel is relegated to an imaginary world and was not tested on actual humans and animals. ;)

Sara Levine's gift for narration is almost unparalleled. I'd never read anything of hers before and absolutely recommend this book. Roxanne Gay's Buzzfeed piece "Not Here to Make Friends - On the importance of unlikable female protagonists." piqued my interest and I was not disappointed.

This is a tongue-in-cheek story about a young woman who HAS grown up but still does not know what she wants to do WHEN she grows up...or even how she wants to interact with her family, friends and employers. Her goal is to emulate a character from the real, original Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson; the result is continual disaster. Some of the dips and turns are pretty funny.

Recommended if you have a weird sense of humor.

Sara is a captivating writer. She gave a new twist on an old classic. Fun read, with a dark undertone.
Throw her heart
I dug this book. Sure, like most people I wanted a meteor to fall on the main character and a volcano to cover the remains and a supernova to remove all traces of what could possibly be left of her, BUT it's not east to write a character that I can despise so much and still find humorous and wonderfully flawed. Yes, this book will grate on your nerves, but only because you get invested in it. If you didn't care, it wouldn't bother you. It's well written and well put together and all in all I'd have no problems suggesting this book to anyone. It's DYING to be made into a stage play. I'd go to watch that.

ARRRRRRRRRR!!!
I read a very favorable review of this book on nancypearl and the book lived up to the review completely. Wonderfully written quirky and funny story with an underlying serious message and perfect ending. So good in fact that I took the time (for the first time) to write a review on Amazon. Looking forward to more from the author.
