This third novel of the Cazalet Chronicles quintet is aptly named Confusion. It covers a period of time when WWII has intensified, and all able bodies are called upon to serve their countries. Some countries switch allegiances, some move from neutrality to battle in their own ways, and resistance forces within many countries under seige are increasing their efforts to aid the Allies.

Confusion, the third volume in Elizabeth Jane Howard’s acclaimed Cazalet Chronicles, begins when Polly sorts out her late mother’s possessions. When she sees the long row of tightly packed clothes she dreads touching them. It was as though she would be colluding in the inexorable departure, the disappearance that had been made alone and for ever and against everyone’s wishes.

Elizabeth Jane Howard. I mean, nobody would think for a moment that you’d train people to play tiddlywinks – certainly not millions of grown-up American men. The Light Years: Hugh, the eldest of the Cazalet siblings, was wounded in France and is haunted by recurring nightmares and the prospect of another war. Edward adores his wife, a former dancer, yet he’s incapable of remaining faithful. Confusion: As the world reels in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor, the Cazalets are dealt a tragic blow, and a new generation struggles to find peace with each other, a peace that seems to prove as elusive as it is in the larger world. But the family comes together again as three generations of Cazalets struggle to hold onto Home Place, the beloved Sussex estate that has been their refuge and their heart.

This is the third novel in a four-volume saga. The book takes up the story of the Cazalet family in the spring of 1942, and follows them through the war to VE day, 8th May 1945. Polly and Clary have left Home Place for London, Louise has married, and Archie and Polly fall in love.

I loved the first two books but was bitterly disappointed in Book 3. Without giving up too much to readers yet to come I will say that the young people who grew up in the first two books were charming, funny, frustrating and interesting, these young adults however, are vapid, selfish, totally unmotivated and have the least parental involvement you could imagine. I could not wait to finish the book. Having invested my time in 3 of the Chronicles I will go for #4, though not immediately. I do need a break from these horrid young adults!

I am totally engrossed in this series! I thought I'd take a break after volume 2, but as soon as I opened volume 3, it just pulled me in. EJH is a terrific writer. Such great insights she gives to the younger people who are so much part of all that is happening. Though much of it is everyday life, that's pretty much what most of life is about. Against the backdrop of WWII the family has many constraints even though they are better off than many.

I liked this book, but only because I had read the previous two in the series. It would be impossible to make sense of any of it, even after reading the introduction, without reading this previous volume.
What I like best about these books is the author's use of detail that makes the stories and characters so real. Each character has a different story and point of view although the events are often the same. The plot moves slowly because the character development is the focus.

Cazalet Chronicles is one of the best English family sagas ever written. PBS Masterpiece Theatre series, while beautifully done, stopped mid-stream in the second novel, "Marking Time." There are five novels in all--this is the third one and, like all the others, it's a superb read!

I have only recently discovered Ms Howard's books. (Yes I know I'm way late doing this). I can't praise her novels enough. The Cazalet Chronicles are fabulous. I hated to have them end, but there are several other Howard books that are great too. I am a belated but avid fan!!

I loved the entire series of The Cazelet Chronicles and recommend buying the whole series so you won't have down time between finishing one and starting the next. Very well written book about an extended family and complex characters.

And extraordinarily well told family chronicle. An involving story with evolving characters. Evoking time and place of WW2 England the confusing mores and class distinctions of a time gone by.
I am loving this series by Elizabeth Howard...this is #3 and I finished it at 3:00am...could not put it down..I kept thing I would read a few more pages and then a few more and on it went. The characters of the Cazalot family are so well developed I feel I know them personally. I feel their joy and sorrow and their love attachments and the secrets they only share with Archie. I am so thankful for the family tree in front of the book since I am mostly reading about the grandchildren of the matriarch and patriarch at this point . The family has a country house, called Home Place, in the country for escape during WWII. They seem to take in anyone who needs a place to lay their head fit them into the family while doing so. Hugh and Edward continue to run the family business as the father, William. is blind and does not add much to his once wood/sawmill business in London. They are all getting older, even the chauffeur, the cook, the maids, etc. as the war continues. Rupert continues to be missing in action and the speculation is he is dead. Churchill is not re-elected; Roosevelt has died and the war is winding down except in the Pacific. There is an intriguing surprise regarding Zoe's new love; another surprise come at the very end of the book.

I got my book from Amazon at a good price and have loved it so much I don't want the series to come to an end but can't stop reading them. This is a great escape if you want a great read.
