A gripping fictional account of actual historical events, showing the courage and sacrifice of women in 1800s Texas Usually, I don't care much for fiction, but this historical novel held my interest. I have bought copies to give as gifts.
Not enough books are written about the role of women in Texas history. I gladly give this book five stars for telling the revealing stories of brave women in Texas history. The women brought a sensitivity to history that is lacking in most history about men.
There was a saying in Texas, "Texas is hell on horses and women." Actually, horses had it better than most women. But in this book, the women are up to the task of settling the rough land of Texas. And then the frontier is gone.

First, do not judge this book by it's cover! The cover does not do the book justice in any way. This is a wonderfully well written, well researched, historical, and adventurous life story of a multi generational family of women in the 1800's. I think males would enjoy this as well, though. The characters and the events are not contrived because they were real. Janice Woods Windle is a legitimately fine writer. If you enjoy excellent characters intertwined with real events and how they endured and prevailed over seemingly impossible obstacles, you are bound to like this book. It doesn't get much better except that this is book one of a trilogy. I can hardly wait to immerse myself in book two and three of the set.

I read this book many years ago and have seen the movie at least three times. It is one of those books that just sticks with you long after you close the cover. It is something that I wanted for my library. The author writes about her ancestor and obtained the material from letters and stories passed down through time. It's historical accuracy seems to be true. I loved the portrayal of the women and the courage it took to make the treacherous journey across country to make a new home in the west. Wonder if women today could display such unselfishness and courage...

This book is the compilation of several journals written by some of the women who settled Texas. The book is a must read for anyone who enjoys a good tale, but also for the history buff. I've read it twice and have purchased it so I can read it again. I highly recommend "True Women" by Janice Woods Windle. Great read.

Janice Wood Windle is one of those authors that can take you back in history and make you believe you are actually there. Considering that this book is based on fact makes it even more compelling.
True Women is a very well written novel based on historical facts researched by the author regarding her female ancestors. Some may remember the movie version, which was the reason I wanted to read the book. It is quite a testimonial about the love and lives of the strong and brave women that helped to shape this country and the hardships they endured. I found it fascinating. the author captured the flavor of the period extremely well and in great detail.
