Halifax lawyer Monty Collins begins to investigate Burke's IRA past.

Declan Burke fled Ireland forty years ago and never looked back. Halifax lawyer Monty Collins begins to investigate Burke's IRA past.

Go back to the beginning of the Collins-Burke mysteries with this collection, which includes the first three novels in the award-winning series: Sign of the Cross, Obit, and Barrington Street Blues. Sign of the Cross: This winner of the Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel introduces lawyer Monty Collins who meets Father Brennan Burke when he represents him: the priest is the lead suspect in the murder of a young woman.

Declan Burke fled Ireland forty years ago and never looked back. Now settled in New York, he thinks he’s put the old country behind him, until he reads the obituary of one Cathal Murphy. The obituary, he sees at once, is not about Murphy at all. It is a coded indictment of Burke’s own life. And an announcement of his impending death. Halifax lawyer Monty Collins investigates the obit with its allusions to Burke’s IRA past. Collins gets no help from Burke, who — good soldier to the end — keeps the silence of the grave. But Burke’s denial becomes harder to maintain following a burst of gunfire at a family wedding. The shooting brings another old soldier onto the field: Leo Killeen, the commanding officer of Burke’s former battalion in Dublin. But he also has secrets to protect. When a body is found in a rundown Brooklyn flat, Collins wonders just how far Killeen will go to keep those secrets under wraps. From the farms of Ireland to the tenements of New York City, Monty is confronted by a cast of enigmatic characters, including the owner of a nightclub frequented by the New York mob; a sultry chanteuse; and Burke’s hotheaded son Francis, whose resentment and dubious activities set the family on a road to destruction. Monty isn’t the only one who is surprised when he reaches the end of the road. Burke too must now confront the suspicion that he has been manipulated all along by an unseen hand.

Montage, a lawyer, gets drawn into this complex tale of past IRA activities and flight from Ireland of the father of the Burke clan in New York. A coded obituary is published which provides enigmatic clues. As he begins to partner and develops friendship with Father Burke to investigate there is love, sex, the Catholic Church, murder, music, estrangement, and more.

The Irish political drama played out in the 20th century is the background for this murder mystery. Anne Emery does an excellent job of explaining the complicated conflict between Irish Republicans and those who accepted compromises made with the English. Repercussions play out in the Collins-Burke families as the past returns to haunt Burke's taciturn and irascible father. Although not necessary, a working knowledge of recent Irish history (and and Irish family) will deepen the reader's appreciation for the cultural and social nuances of what I found to be an engrossing and engaging story peopled with interesting characters.

Ms. Emery has done her usual good job of keeping you interested in the story.

Emery has developed some very likable characters in this series. The plot is good in this one-a bit confusing in areas , but all is resolved nicely. Looking forward to the next one.
Perilanim
Well plotted and good characters, but too far fetched for me. Not a fan of weaving everything back to the Russians during the Cold War.
Hurus
The story line should have made this an interesting book but there were too many characters and so much going on - side plots and twists - that it was not the read that the first book was.

Great Mystery, good local color. Certainly encouraged me to continue reading the series. Characters well developed and intricate plot. A+
I really enjoyed Anne Emery's first book Sign Of The Cross and looked forward to the second in the trilogy. I managed to finish despite the confusing cast of characters and lack of a cohesive plot and story line. Too many characters inserted and then dropped. Why would anyone care if Declan Burke was shot by the end of the book ?
