Let it Come Down book.

Let it Come Down book. His books have stayed in my head like almost nothing else I read back then – I only have to open them now and I smell thuya wood and the smoke from the snail-sellers and I see the hotel room of a girl I haven't seen for real in nearly two decades.

In Let It Come Down, Paul Bowles plots the doomed trajectory of Nelson Dyar, a New York bank teller who comes to. .Paul Bowles was born in 1910 and studied music with composer Aaron Copland before moving to Tangier, Morocco

Rich in descriptions of the corruption and decadence of the International Zone in the last days before Moroccan independence. Paul Bowles was born in 1910 and studied music with composer Aaron Copland before moving to Tangier, Morocco. A devastatingly imaginative observer of the West's encounter with the East, he is the author of four highly acclaimed novels: The Sheltering Sky, Let It Come Down, The Spider's House, and Up Above the World.

The Sheltering Sky. PAUL BOWLES. With a Preface by the Author. The book had a difficult time getting published. Commissioned by Doubleday, it was immediately refused by them for not being a novel. Then it went through a bad year of being turned down by every publisher who saw it. It was I, and not my agent, who finally sent the typescript to James Laughlin of New Directions, and fortunately he liked it and agreed to publish it.

Let It Come Down is Paul Bowles's second novel, first published in 1952. A dark, even bleak, novel, Let It Come Down follows American Nelson Dyar as he arrives in the International Zone of Tangier, Morocco to begin a new job and a new life. Dyar's exploration of the brothels, drugs and unsavoury characters of Tangier leads him gradually, logically, to a sinister conclusion. Bowles took the book's title from Macbeth II., just before Banquo is murdered: Banquo: It will be rain to-night.

In it is hidden mercy. The short fiction of American literary cult figure Paul Bowles is marked by a unique, delicately spare style, and a dark, rich, exotic mood, by turns chilling, ironic, and wry-possessing a symmetry between beauty and terror that is haunting and ultimate. As the title tells us, the protagonist of this novel is not poor Nelson Dyar. The stars of this show are Rain and Tangier. Against competition of that nature, Mr. Dyar's transformation seems inevitable. Once again, Bowles' sense of place completely subsumes the reader into a land so foreign and so complete that we feel the damp and smell the ocean. We watch as Dyar morphs, Kafka-like, into something less than human. Or maybe human of a very different sort. It's fascinating to watch, and still a little baffling. Bowles is masterful here.

can't compare to his other works.

Well written and a great sense of place and time. There were a great many typos in the book - it appeared to have been optically scanned into digital format without much proofreading.

Captures glimpses of the famous city in the post war international zone. Truly a rich depiction of a man slowly corrupted, with a host of colorful and flawed characters around him.

I would have loved to have met him.

Granted he is a very good writer (and musician) but this book is so depressing. The leading character is unlikeable and like just about every other character, is alcoholic and on drugs. Most of the writing internalizes each character - you are more aware of their thoughts than who they are...and usually they are drunk or stoned. I found no humor in any of the writing. It might have helped if there was some. When I finished reading I was left rather depressed.....

Enjoyed reading about the time period this novel was set in. Bowles bogged down when he tried to describe the hashish experience. Not really happy with the ending
paul bowles' favorite theme is "culture clash," and this novel is no exception. although it is not as good as THE SHELTERING SKY, it remains a riveting study of mankind's basic nature which, according to bowles, is composed of avarice and depravity.
