If the glimpes at Doops' book make you curious for more, I highly recommend Wil Campbell's novella Cecelia's Sin which may offer some insight to the themes of the Glad River.

Will Campbell is an amazing storyteller

No one in Claughton County ever understood why Doops Momber refused. Will Campbell is an amazing storyteller. This book (first published in 1982 and recently re-issued by Smyth & Helwys) is about "community" and "neighborhood. It could not be more timely for it speaks to the very issues we wrestle with today - us vs. them, who is "in" and who is "out," racism, justice, faith, religion, and the bonds that knit people together.

Campbell River or Wiwek̓a̱m is a city in British Columbia on the east coast of Vancouver Island at the south end of Discovery Passage, which lies along the important Inside Passage shipping route. Campbell River and Region is in close proximity to the neighboring communities of Quadra and the Discovery Islands, Sayward, Oyster River, Gold River, Tahsis and Zeballos.

The Glad River is a deeply affecting novel. Grounded in a particular place and time, its themes are, nonetheless, universal. A novel that probes the limits of religion and the state, it is also the work of a master storyteller and civil rights activist whose works are considered a treasure of modern Southern literature.

In his book The Stem of Jesse, Campbell examined the experience of Sam Oni . The Glad River (1982): novel.

In his book The Stem of Jesse, Campbell examined the experience of Sam Oni, the first black student to attend Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, as well as the moral courage of Joseph Hendricks, who shepherded Mercer through the process of desegregation. Cecelia's Sin (1983): historical novel set among the early Baptists. The Lord's Prayer for Our Time (1983) (with Will McBride and Bonnie Campbell).

Campbell, director of the Committee of Southern Churchmen, offered a warmly understanding portrait of Southern life in Brother to a Dragonfly (1977); and here, in his first novel, he makes some subtle theological distinctions about human love and human worship through the tale of three friends whose ""community"" survives war, persecution, and death.

The Glad River won a first-prize award from the Friends of American Writers in 1982. His works have also won a Lyndhurst Prize and an Alex Haley Award. Richard Goode is Professor of History at Lipscomb University.

The Campbell River Storm have acquired 2001 Dman Ryan Suzukovich from the PJHL Grandview Steelers. Ryan should be in the lineup on Friday at the Brindy against the Oceanside Generals Jr. Hockey Club. Campbell River Storm. 18 hrs ·. Storm Broadcaster Mark Berry has offered up his selection for Storm Team of the Decade. Since everyone else is, I thought I would offer up my own picks for the Team of the Decade, the 20-10's. This was incredibly tough, not for the names I put on the list but for the one's I missed

I'm not sure I got the point... I read the entire book, and when I was through, I thought, "...what was this about?" Friendship of some Army buddies? Yes. Horrors of war? Sure. Beyond that, I'm not too sure I understand what Will Campbell was trying to convey. Left me wondering: "what's the point here??"

A complex fascinating read. I am still not quite finished but I love the overlapping story of the three American lads sent off to war and the Anabaptists whose fate I am yet to read about.
A challenge to my faith in a very psotive way and a very easy to read style.
Reminds me on some little way of Catch 22. but on a more Christian theme
Worth trying

A serious novel without being too dense to get through. I loved it. So glad to have discovered this author.
OTANO
First and foremost, Will Campbell presents the reader with a simple, wonderful story of three men and their interactions with one another. If you allow it, The Glad River will begin to show its many layers and expose themes the casual reader may not have expected to find within the current setting. The search for a "real baptist" by the main character, Doops Momber, allows the reader to define his or her own theological views of what a real Christian may be, and to define (and find) oneself as Doops does.

If the glimpes at Doops' book make you curious for more, I highly recommend Wil Campbell's novella Cecelia's Sin which may offer some insight to the themes of the Glad River. In any case, Cecelia's Sin makes a wonderful companion book.

I was first introduced to this book more than ten years ago. I have read it again almost annually. Campbell, one of the best storytellers of our time, with his tongue planted firmly in his cheek and his words planted deep within your soul, brings you along with Doops on his journey. A journey with destinations in the midst of search, water, baptism and life. A journey deeper into your faith and soul than you will first expect. I would strongly suggest reading Campbell's "Cecila's Sin" upon completion of "The Glad River."
