Although he refused to admit to it, they were pretty sure that this was what their father was up to, and they were worried about what the consequences might be if the police found out.

s temper and mood changes were erratic enough as it was, and knowing that when Benny came home from school he was there on his own with him every evening, until Vera got in from work, was worrying enough. If he was using him as a runner, then if he thought that Benny had been the one who’d told them he might retaliate in some way.

The Cobbler's Kids (Paperback).

Returning from the war, handsome Michael Quinn the cobbler is a changed man. He moves his family from their comfortable home to live over a shop in Liverpool’s notorious Scotland Road. Admired and liked by his customers, he is a tyrant at home, ruling his family with a rod of iron and a fist of steel. When their mother dies, 14-year-old Vera is expected to keep house for him and her brothers Eddy and young Benny. And so begins a life of hardship and little joy for Vera, where Michael drinks away their money, and even the small wages Eddy and she manage to earn are barely enough to keep the small family going. Then one day Michael brings Di Deverill home and life becomes an even greater hell for Vera—will she ever be saved from a life of drudgery and few rewards?

And I like a book with a strong character...one who is smart, knows what she wants and goes after it. I know one guy who came back from the army completely changed...they called it shell shock. So I even understood, but hated the father for the terrible way he treated his family...even of was a result of his service to his country. If had been me....am sure I would not have cared for this man at all.

An interesting book that kept me up at night to keep reading. I like historical novels and this gave me an insight into the life of the poor and working class in England at the beginning of the 1900s. It also depicted in a very real way the effects of WWI on the men who saw and felt the horrors of war.

I found the book tedious & repetitive. I hate to not finish a book because I'm optimistic that it will improve but the happy ending didn't redeem it from the endless retelling of abuse from the father. I think the reader grasps that point very quickly so it wasn't necessary to keep beating a dead horse so to speak.

I didn't finish this book. It was nothing but depressing. The degradation and evil running throughout was something I didn't want to fill my mind with. It might have ended on an upswing, I don't know, but I couldn't wade through the sickness to get there
Goldcrusher
A fantastic story with wonderful characters and a great storyline although I found that there was a lot of repetition through out in the descriptions of certain events or people.

I liked the story line of this book, but found it somewhat confusing as it jumps from one person's view to another's without any warning, and I was constantly having to go back and reread parts of it to figure out who's point of view it was supposed to be.
FRAY
Most depressing book I've ever read. Not sure I would recommend. But most of the time it held my interest and I skimmed the last few chapters.
This was a very good book with interesting characters. It kept me engaged the entire time. I would recommend it.
