'The Presence' was another awesome example of John Saul's ability to bring a story to life and leave me questioning the possibilities. Full of beautifully described scenery, possibilities of the unknown, great characters and scenarios that were full of surprises. The storyline was well written and the way it played out kept me glued to the pages. The characters were an array of personalities. Katharine was the typical mother who wanted the best for her family. She was a great lead. She's strong, determined and very strong willed when it came to her son Michael. He is not the typical teenager, but I think that has a lot to do with the relationship with his mother and what they had actually been through. Rob was an all around great guy. His dedication to Katharine, Michael and his work were admirable. A great add to your tbr list. Recommended read.

This was an enjoyable story but since it was written in the late 1990s it comes across as a bit dated in regard to the technology available to the characters in the book. Other than that, and if you ignore the lack of real science that would make the events in the book more believable, this was well worth the time it took to read.

I was surprised to be hooked immediately. The characters are likable and realistic. The bad guys are historically based. A mystery/sci-fi novel that kept me intrigued.
Andromathris
Imagine you're a good single mother who worries over your teenage son who has a history of asthma. Your son, Michael, says he's going to the movies, but when he comes home late he tells you that he and his new friends decided to play video games instead, and lost track of time. It's a lie. The boys "sort of" broke into a dive shop and went scuba diving at night in a gloomy lagoon. So what? Although it was only Michael's second dive, he's home safe, right?
Unfortunately, there was something insidious in those "borrowed" dive tanks that will involve you and your son in a ruthless scheme of such incredible complexity that it takes three scientists and a computer hacker to unravel the mystery and save Michael. The problem is the author builds the complexity gradually until he has enough pages for a book, and then slams out the ending. It's like getting cold runny eggs when you expected an omelet.
This plot is billed as suspense - mystery - horror, but Saul has to use science fiction and fantasy themes, or what I call "incredibilities," to try to hold it together. Saul attempts to create dread by giving an apparently normal, upstanding character extraordinary power to do incredibly awful stuff to the nearly defenseless until he's defeated in the last chapter. That doesn't work for me as well as creating incredible characters with human frailties who have to struggle with the good guys throughout the story, so much so that you might doubt who's going to will win. For my idea of a much better tale in this genre, see my review of "Running with the Demon" by Terry Brooks.

John Saul once again proves he is a master storyteller! I could not stop reading this book. It started out a little slow but then it picked up and kept rolling. I had a hard time trying to figure out what was going on and everything I came up was totally wrong. It is full of surprises from one page to the next. To say the least it's a little bit scary but not in a horror type of book but more in a sense that it makes you wonder if aliens exist. Read it and enjoy is all I can say.

Left a few questions for me, or more probably, my eyes may have glazed over and I missed the answers. An OK read, seemed longer that it should have. I needed a relaxing read, this was it. Not his best book but nothing alarmingly awful about it either.
Swift Summer
This book is scifi but it really is easy to believe. I could not put this story down as it was so unusual.
Although the story was well written, it was predictable. I was curious how the author would end it, so I continued to read till the end. I think it might make a good movie, but I found myself wanting to get to the ending so I could start another book.
