It is one of the sources of a mid-15th century work called Peter Idley's Instructions to his Son. Michael Malone's 1986 comic novel Handling Sin used Mannyng's title for a widely different treatment of the seven deadly sins. Handlyng Synne is considered a work of greater literary merit than Mannyng's only other known poem, the Chronicle

On the Ides of March, our hero, Raleigh Whittier Hayes (forgetful husband, baffled father, prosperous insurance agent, and leading citizen of Thermopylae, North Carolina), learns that his father has discharged himself from the hospital, taken all his money out of the bank and, with a young black female mental patient, vanished in a yellow Cadillac convertible. Left behind is a mysterious list of seven outrageous tasks that Raleigh must perform in order to rescue his father and his inheritance.

And so Raleigh and fat Mingo Sheffield (his irrepressibly loyal friend) set off on an uproarious contemporary treasure hunt through a landscape of unforgettable characters, falling into adventures worthy of Tom Jones and Huck Finn. A moving parable of human love and redemption, Handling Sin is Michael Malone's comic masterpiece.

This is the funniest book I've ever read. I bought this copy so I could read a second time. The story is about a conventional insurance agent in a small North Carolina town. He goes to lunch with his Civitan club in the Chinese-run restaurant of the Lotus House hotel. After his meal, he receives a fortune cookie that reads, "You will go completely to pieces by the end of the month." When he returns to his office, he learns that his father, a deposed Episcopal priest who was (supposed to be) dying in the hospital, had checked out AMA, withdrawn his entire bank account, purchased a new yellow Cadillac convertible, and departed for New Orleans with a young woman of color who worked in the hospital. He learns further that his father has left him a list of tasks to do, the final one of which is to meet hm in New Orleans. His fortune has come true. The rest of the book is a hilarious road trip to meet his father.

I first read this book a long time ago. It was recommended to me by an independent book store in Louisiana. I have read it a few times since and I never get tired of the hero’s journey. Be prepared to love and laugh at these remarkable characters. You may never want the book to end.

I love most everything Malone has written, but Handling Sin is my all time favorite. He overdid himself with an uncanny knack of the character and plot development, while building suspense, with multiple segments that were SO funny, I regularly found myself laughing so hard, tears were running. This is a HOOT from beginning to end - had read it several years ago, had time to pick it up again, and this man never disappoints. A book well worth taking the time to read AGAIN, after an initial read. You will not be disappointed.

I have to admit that I gave up reading at 63%. I found the supporting characters irritating and the situations just too outlandish to continue. In fact at one point I breathed a sigh of relief when it looked like one character had quit the premises. Unfortunately he showed up again like the proverbial bad penny. I did like Raleigh and his wife very much, however. I have not deleted the book off my Kindle and I might try reading it in chunks to see what happens "down the road."

I will state here that Micheal Malone is of that rare breed of authors aptly called a wordsmith. His prose was just remarkable with subtle (and not so subtle) twists and tweaks that just made his writing shine - clearly someone who has fun with words and phrases. He brings his remarkable characters fully to life - which might just be why I gave up because to me they were almost living breathing people that I was spending time with and I just flat didn't like them.

This book would probably make a wonderful movie and in a way I hope that it will show up in theaters. It is definitely more a guy novel that "chick lit", and perhaps that's why I just didn't quite relate to this well-crafted novel.

How many copies of this book have I bought? I've lost count. It's my go-to gift book. Handling Sin is a wonderful romp throughout the south undertaken by a sober insurance agent, Raleigh, in desperate search of his runaway elderly father. Raleigh's search is challenged by adventures into situations light miles outside his comfort zone; he has to venture deep into layer upon layers of his eccentric southern family. In the process, Raleigh finds that his carefully constructed world view, inhabited by a population of one, isn't worth it and he sees that the chaos beyond his borders is vibrant and not always so bad.

As my family's historian, I'm often asked what family members were like in the "olden days." Easy peasy. I whip out a copy of Handling Sin and say, "Here, kid; read this and all your questions will be answered." This book needs to be made into one of those quizzes popular now: What character in Handling Sin are you?

Mt. Malone said he would like to see this book made into a movie, well.........It has been, sort of, it just remained me of the very funny parts of several old movies! It truly was a joy to read, a long one for sure, but still a joy!

It reminded me, in places, just a bit, of the following movies: Lilys of the Valley (the encounter with the nuns) Smokey and the Bandit (the capers with the tractor trailer) It's a Mad Mad World (.the craziness on the mountain) Easy Rider (the motorcycle escapades) Rainman (because of his realationship with his slightly off crazy neighbor) and any old movie located in New Orleams that covered all those dark nite clubs and all that jazz! His run away father was like a piece of The Bucket List. A man with a mission and a keen sense of humor.,

It was wonderful and refreshing. Take the time, spend a couple of days and enjoy a fun book that captures many of life's lessons. I am sure you will see it's well worth the ride, yellow caddie and all!
