Court Martial (Fox), Hardy, Adam, Very Good Book. Title : Fox The Press Gang. Authors : Hardy, Adam. Product Category : Books. Condition : Very Good.

In Nelson's day the punishments inflicted by the Royal Navy were notoriously brutal and barbaric. George Abercrombie Fox, ruthless and ambitious hero of "Treasure" and "Blood for Breakfast", must face the deadly consequences of his rapacious search for gold. For now Fox was on trial for desertion and cowardice -- with a guilty verdict a guarantee that he'd be hung ... drawn ... and quartered. Exactly the vengeance his superiors had plotted!

While all the previous books are very good, my most enjoyed book so far is this one. To be brief, Lt. Fox has command of a ship, loses that command to a Capt. with no ability but influence. He fights sea and land battles. False charges are bought against him in a court martial and he is cleared of all charges including being a coward. He is later beaten up on shore by this same Capt. with a group of his hired sailors. The rest you'll have to read for yourself.

Our hero continues his constant course, infernally financially frustrating though it may be, as England's budding war with Napoleon slowly unfolds. I love Fox's character, steadfast and true, always making the correct (courageous) choice concerning England's Royal Navy. Though his family desperately needs fiduciary assistance, George begrudgingly makes the heroic, patriotic choice every time. Oh well, he'll get rich and save his family in the next installment. Not.

An excellent, enjoyable and easy read. Although the plot lines tend to be predictable, the "Fox" series continues provide an excellent look into the trials and travails of a tarpaulin sailor in the Royal Navy at a time when class prejudices made the life of an officer who came up through the hawse an almost insurmountably difficult life. I highly recommend this work for any fan of naval literature.

If you are a British Naval Junkie from the Napoleonic wars (and a little starved), this series will suffice if you don't try it compare it to real greats like Hornblower.
The character (underdog type) is very likable and you have to like his tenacity, though mostly unbelievable. In this particular book #7 Hardy had a golden opportunity to create some witty dialog during the trial - in the best British gentleman vernacular - and to try to put into perspective some of the ridiculously fantastical events leading up to it. Total failure on that level.
The books are very short & mainly fun if you root for the character , and don't take them too seriously.

I am now reading No. 10 of this series, and they are all blending together, This series is a somewhat different take on the genre than the Hornblower/Bolitho "iron man, wooden ship" novel. Closer to but much better than the victor Suthern novels. It is about time, already that Fox finally starts to square accounts with his various nemeses.

This is a very well written series of "books" but the publisher has unfortunately decided to sell them as chapter-length books. I read them in spite of this until #11 which was 111 pages - sorry, I'm done now.
Excellent main character, gripping plots, good technical detail, but the books have begun to end prior to the end of the final action - then they don't pick up in the next episode - very frustrating.

I bought a used set (of 9) of these in a paperback store back in the '80s. I loved them! They were so much grittier than any naval fiction prior to their arrival. They remind me of Richard Sharpe (Bernard Cornwell) where the real enemies are aristocratic (and horrible) officers.
... Between the 3rd person and stream of consciousness writing in addition to the sailing vernacular and jargon it was a tough read all around. I fought through (as G.A. FOX WOULD SAY) by God! And completed this section of the story. Not sure if I'll continue though as I keep hoping this starts to clear up.
