By James Jones Foreword by Francine Prose. By James Jones Foreword by Francine Prose. Category: Military Fiction Literary Fiction Historical Fiction. But they will all discover the thin red line that divides the sane from the mad-and the living from the dead-in this unforgettable portrait that captures for all time the total experience of men at war. Foreword by Francine Prose Brutal, direct, and powerful. The men are real, the words are real, death is real, imminent and immediate. Los Angeles Times A rare and splendid accomplishment. strong and ambitious, spacious, and as honest as any novel ever written.

James Jones fought in that battle, and The Thin Red Line is his haunting portrait of men and war. The soldiers of C-for-Charlie Company are not cast from the heroic mold. The unit’s captain is too intelligent and sensitive for the job, his first sergeant is half mad, and the enlisted men begin the campaign gripped by cowardice. Jones’s moving portrayal of the Pacific combat experience stands among the great literature of World War II. This ebook features an illustrated biography of James Jones including rare photos from the author’s estate. Classics Fiction Historical.

The Thin Red Line is the classic novel by James Jones dealing with the horrific battle of Guadalcanal fought in the Pacific in 1942 between the United States and the Imperial Japanese Army. The author is James Jones who wrote the book in 1962 based on his own combat experiences in the Pacific during World War II. The novel has become a modern classic and has been filmed by Hollywood. It ranks as one of the greatest war novels ever written putting it in the same category as Jones own From Here to Eternity, Norman Mailer's The Naked and the Dead and Irwin Shaw's The Young Lions. This novel is not for the faint of heart! It is a modern day version of Stephen Crane's classic of the Civil War "The Red Badge of Courage." However, unlike Crane who featured on one main character Henry Fleming at the battle of Chancellorsville, this searing and bloody book takes us into the minds of several characters. We see the viewpoints of such men as Sarge Eddie Welsh, Private Don Doll, Pvt. John Bell (sex obsessed for the charms of his wife Marty back home), Corporal Fife and Captain James Stein. This novel has little plot other than following the terrible fight for Hill 209. Along the way we see men beheaded, torn apart by machine guns, wounded in gruesome and fatal ways and witness the arguments and ego battles among the military personnel. The jungle was a horrible place filled with torrential rains, mud, insects, searing heat and damp. Disease was rampant as men fought to survive against the human enemy they faced and the harsh conditions in which they were forced to live. This book is an experience for anyone who reads its bloody pages. Thank God for patriots who died so America might live. The book is a testimony to the bravery and courage of our fighting men. God bless America!

I picked up this novel soon after completing the author’s From Here to Eternity. The Thin Red Line was intended to be the second book of a planned trilogy, picking up with the amphibious landing and fight for Guadalcanal.

As with From Here to Eternity, which focused on a military base in Hawaii immediately preceding the attack on Pearl Harbor, the writing in The Thin Red Line is historically authentic, having been written soon after the events depicted in the novel. The characters in the book, members of Charlie Company, are vivid and sharply drawn. The culture of the army unit, especially having to do with sexual issues, was educational for me. I had seen the movie depiction of the novel and my disappointment in the film actually caused me to delay reading the book. Suffice it to say, the book is far better than the movie.

My only quibble, and one that I also found in From Here to Eternity is the author’s assumption that the reader is familiar with army ranks and the various subdivisions in an army (i.e. squad, company, battalion, regiment, etc.). This becomes somewhat confusing at times, though not insurmountable. Slightly more troublesome is the absence of maps. The book is rife with topographical and geographic description, which would have been far more useful had it been accompanied by maps detailing the areas of operation.

All in all, an outstanding period piece covering one of the seminal military campaigns of our age. One of the best war novels I’ve read.

This is probably one of the more honest war novels ever written. Men are not wearing clean uniforms. Death is not clean. Men change, some for the better, some for the worse. Some of the characters discover that they are not cowards, some discover that they really are self sufficient, others find strengths or weaknesses. Some of the characters lose their souls and their humanity.

Death comes everywhere. You might die because your group didn't get off the troop transport soon enough before it was bombed. You might face death because you unexpectedly stumbled across an enemy soldier when you were trying to relive yourself, and you ended up killing him by scratching him, beating him with your fists, and finally strangling him. You face death because some idiot ordered a direct assault on a position, and one of your comrades was nearly cut in half by a machine gun; his intestines are hanging out, and he is screaming in pain.

This is not a book for the faint heart-ed; but it is a book that explains what most survivors of combat don't want to talk about. What really happens, and what it does to you.

THE THIN RED LINE by JAMES JONES is a book worth purchasing from "amazon" it is well worth your money and time spend reading it. I always buy the "kindle" version because it works best for me, However what ever version you buy amazon will see that you are well taken care.
The book opens with a Company of Army soldiers getting ready to go overseas to an Island called Guadalcanal ( one of the first Islands invaded by the United States, after the Japs bombed Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941, the beginning of WWII) You will get their experience of Troop Transport WW II. Also the foul up's that took place in getting to their final assigned jump off area after they landed. The Military politics that cost the Company Commander's job, the lives lost following the Lt. Col.'s poor plan of attacking and occupation of a mountain. the false recommendation for a Medal of Honor. A recommendation for the Lt. Colonel's friend a promotion for himself to Full Colonel.(When all was done the Lt. Colonel used the plan that the original Company Captain wanted to use)
The Lt. Col. that master minded the operation is something that will make any Veteran sick to their stomach and surprise people that have not served.
I hope you get this book and stick with it from cover to cover. It is something you will remember for a long time, I could tell you much more, but I don't want to miss lead you or have you miss lead yourself. Good Reading your in for a treat and as I said at the beginning, amazon will treat you well .
