Con Ed by Matthew Klein is a roller coaster of a book, wonderful fun from start to finish. Praise for Switchback: "If this fine little genre-bending adventure doesn't sell like hell, then there's no justice. Con Ed's a total gas and Matthew Klein is no con. He's the real thing, one hell of a writer. Robert Ward, author of Four Kinds of Rain. It starts with a set-up primed for trouble: a gazillionaire hedge funder, the kind of guy who has no need to work very hard to earn the fanged envy of his colleagues, thanks not only to his money but also to his classy wife and the hormonal receptionist who lusts after him.

I read what I thought was Matthew Klein's first novel, Con Ed, a couple of weeks ago. Loved it! Then I discovered that Klein had written an earlier novel that had been published in Britain but not in the U.S. So I was pleased that I was able to get a copy of Switchback via Amazon.com.

The most interesting thing about reading Switchback is to see how far Klein has come as a writer in just a couple of years. Like Con Ed, Switchback is replete with engaging characters, breathtaking plot twists
(with an exposition clear enough so that even an easily confused reader like me doesn't get lost), snappy dialog, and confident narrative. But Switchback lacks the word-smithing cleverness that makes Con Ed such a remarkable book to read. (I had to stop and read passages of Con Ed to my girlfriend, who enjoyed them even though she had no idea how they fit into the overall plot. I had no such temptations while I was reading Switchback.)

If you haven't read either of Klein's books, read Switchback before Con Ed, so you'll be reading them in the order in which they were written. I think you'll get more out of Switchback that way, because it is an enjoyable read, and not just for a first effort. And then, when you read Con Ed, you'll be pleasantly surprised by how far Klein has grown as a writer from one book to the next. And if you're like me, you'll be eagerly awaiting his next effort to see if this happy trend will continue.

GODMAX
This is a sensational novel that half way through does a complete 180 in the storyline with an even more interesting story taking over from one that was already very interesting and good. Matthew Klein, best known for his later masterpiece Con Ed (also released under the title Conned) wasn't far off the masterpiece level with his debut novel Switchback either.

Look I'm not even going to mention what happens half way through the book and I hope no other reviewers spoil it for potential readers either, but lets just say it's surprising, it's unique, it's brilliant, it will question ever moral inside of you, you'll be asking yourself would you do the same thing? If you really want to know ask me a question in the comments section and I will tell you there but I do not believe in giving away plot spoilers in reviews.

The basic plot (well it's not really but I'm not giving away the halfway surprise plot development) is Timothy Van Bender, a rich ageing financial investor has been running a very successful business venture for a very long time and has a hot new 24 year old secretary who seems to worship him. He has some of America's richest men's money invested in his company. Bender has never really known what he is doing but he always shows extreme confidence, and the exact words to say for any situation immediately enter his mind. So when all his clients' money is invested in the Yen and the Yen starts to go up in value his clients' worth drops $24 million. Bender decides to let it ride and invests the rest of his clients' money in the Yen so at the end of the month his investors won't realise a thing (unless he tells them when he announces the record profits from his bold move). As the days go by the Yen starts to improve, Bender's marriage seems to have been completely refreshed for the better and everything seems like it is going to work out for not only the best but to make Bender's life sheer bliss. That is until the morning he receives a phone call from his wife, telling him she has cancer and goodbye as he listens to her about to commit suicide. However the police and others don't believe it was suicide, the Yen situation worsens and it looks like Bender's easy life is all but over. Then a huge development comes into the plot which I am not going to give away but lets just say, you won't regret picking up this sensational book!

A solid first effort from an author who knows how to suck you in and throw your world in a blender. Smart, although his characters are slightly under developed. An intriguing McGuffin that you aren't sure until all becomes revealed.

The ending stumbles a bit, or perhaps it's just an artistic choice that I wouldn't have made. Still well worth the read. (and perhaps a movie)

Fast-paced book with ok writing. Ending seems rushed and a bit confusing and character developing needs a bit more work. Would be a good mindless beach book.
