L'école des femmes The School For Wives, Moliere The School for Wives is a theatrical comedy written by the seventeenth century French playwright Molière, and considered by some critics, to be one of his finest achievements. In 1661 and 1662 Moliere presented the plays The School for Husbands and then The School for Wives (this one). The central situations of the two have much in common: the arbitrary and jealous lover to whom circumstances have given almost the authority of a husband: the simple ward rescued from physical constraint by the unfettered cunning of love. In between writing the two plays Moliere got married. Listen to both and see if this comedic genius of the farce changed his attitude. Summary by ToddHW and The Translator.

I read this for a class at my university. The book was nothing revolutionary, although there was a couple interesting aspects that I enjoyed.

nice to finally read some of Moliere's writing. I have heard good things about him. Very interesting and funny. If you are looking for a comic play this is a good one. Moliere interned with the great Scaramouche.

Bolt achieves with his translation of Moliere's classic comedy what David Hirson did with his 1991 play, La Bete. While remaining true to the general language of Moliere's time and rhyming couplets in iambic pentameter, Bolt is still able to sprinkle modern touches that make the comedy pop out even more. Bolt's British wit sparkles through the French comedy, making for an enjoyable read as well as performance.
Interesting, too, is Nicholas Dromgoole's introduction, which makes some incredibly interesting points yet also keeps in tone with Bolt's take on Moliere's commedia dell'arte-influenced School For Wives.
Whether you're a fan of Moliere or a novice to his works, Bolt's translation of The School for Wives is a fantastic read that keeps the comedy alive, even after 350 years.
