Sam Shepard, Jack Richardson (Introduction).

Sam Shepard, Jack Richardson (Introduction). To continue my comparisons to other playwrights (limited as my knowledge is), the first two characters we encounter in Suicide in B Flat immediately brought to mind the bumbling pair of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead and later the duo of Beckett's Waiting for Godot.

Three-act tragedy by Sam Shepard, performed in 1978 and published in 1979. The play was awarded the 1979 Pulitzer Prize for drama. Shepard had his first critical and commercial success with this corrosive study of American family life

Three-act tragedy by Sam Shepard, performed in 1978 and published in 1979. Shepard had his first critical and commercial success with this corrosive study of American family life. The play, set on an Illinois farm, centers on the homecoming of Vince and his girlfriend, Shelly. Vince cherishes a romantic, bucolic vision of the home he left six years earlier, but the actual family turns out to be a collection of twisted grotesques

It was directed by Gary Sinise; the set design was by Robert Brill; the costume design was by Allison Reeds; the lighting design was by Kevin Rigdon; the sound design was by Rob Milburn; and the production stage manager was Laura Koch.

Shepard, one of the best dramatists currently writing in the United States, was born on an army base in Illinois and grew up mainly on a ranch in California. His first play was produced off-off-Broadway when he was 19, and he won the first of his 8 Obie Awards when he was 23. A rock lyricist and film actor as well as a dramatist, Shepard has written more than 40 plays, winning the Pulitzer Prize for drama with Buried Child (1981) in 1978. Shepard's later work has become more realistic and more responsive to such traditional concepts of drama as plot, character, and theme.
