The Carousel by British novelist, Rosamunde Pilcher, was published in 1982. Expect this to be a typical Pilcher novel with a setting by the sea in Cornwall. I categorize this short book as women’s fiction that includes some romance, but the love in this book extends to friendship of the young and the old. The protagonist, independent, young Prue Shackleton, is invited to stay with her generous and quirky Aunt Phoebe in Cornwall. On the train ride to Cornwall she meets a quiet child, Charlotte Co The Carousel by British novelist, Rosamunde Pilcher, was published in 1982

It was only a short journey, but it was made that evening, by Daniel and me, in total silence. On other occasions they become strained and tense, and this was one of them. I wanted to break the constraint, to start some trivial conversation, but in the face of such noncooperation I could think of no words for the tall, quiet stranger who sat beside me. His hand, still holding Charlotte's present, lay against his knee.

Rosamunde Pilcher is one of my favorite fiction authors. The Carousel, however, was not what I would have expected of this author.
The character development was true to Pilcher style as was the setting and tone. What was so different to her previous books was that when I completed the last page I felt as though I had not downloaded all of the book. I went back to the Amazon site to check for the number of pages and I remembered that this was to be more of a novella. Yet still I felt that I had missed something and that something was very important- closure. I felt that there should have been additional chapters to complete this book. It is possible that I did not read the description of the book in detail. Maybe there is a completion in another of Pilcher's books that have been published or are to be published in the future. I would not suggest this book to a reader that is unfamiliar with Pilcher, fearing that they would not read her other works.

As a longtime fan of Rosamunde Pildher, it was a pleasure to discover a story of hers I hadn't read. Although not a long novel, it was pure pleasure to become acquainted with the varied cast of characters in this book. A good summer read for those not looking to be shocked, but entertained.

Another excellent and enjoyable read by Rosamunde Pilcher. While I love the Cornwall setting, the only disadvantage of this author is that all (at least all of her books I have read so far) take place in the same setting with characters with similar names/personalities. That makes it a little hard to distinguish and remember particular books after reading. But I do love her descriptive and evocative writing.

I am one of the most ardent Rosamunde Pilcher fans and was so disappointed when I read this book as I felt that she had obviously been given a deadline by her publisher which she had to meet and sat and wrote it in order to get it done. I really didn't enjoy it at all. I felt none of the warmth and enjoyment that I experience in previous books. When I came to the end of the story I felt as if she had reached the required number of pages and ended with a sentence.

First I have to tell you that Rosamunde Pilcher is my favorite author and I think I have read all her writings. Each one is marvelous
and I only wish there were more. If you haven't followed her writings, please get started and don't quit until you have read them all.
Her writings are magnetic and I hope you will allow yourself time to read everyone of her books! Darlene

Carousel is a wonderful, short story about a young lady, her aunt, and a few other characters that come into their life. What I enjoyed about this story is most of us have fond memories of a favorite aunt that made us feel special when we were young. This is a short story as comparison to Shell Seekers which is much longer and a more developed story line. The Carousel is a good book if you are looking for a shorter book to read with a warm story but not too complex.

I stopped when another artist appeared in the scene......is that all she knew to write at the time? :(
I would have given 5 stars except like a lot of stories it is based on the fact that someone made a silly mistake that continued on thru the book to have repercussions, and because Pilcher's books were never really edited for proper flow and punctuations, etc. Why do so many stories have to be the result of an obvious lack of communication that was so simple?
