In each book, Dexter shows a new facet of the complex Morse. In this latest work, Morse must solve two related murders - a problem complicated by a plethora of suspects and by his attraction to one of the possible killers. From Publishers Weekly. The Inspector Morse of A&E and PBS's Mystery fame is clever, urbane and a fairly mild curmudgeon. The Morse of Dexter's novels is far pricklier, offering sharper, more morbid pleasures.

Praise for The Daughters of Cain Very cleverly constructed. It was only the second time Inspector Morse had ever taken over a murder enquiry after the ly dramatic-discovery and sweep of the crime scene. Dexter writes with an urbanity and range of reference that is all his own. -Los Angeles Times You don’t really know Morse until you’ve read hi. Secretly pleased to have missed the blood and gore, Morse and the faithful Lewis go about finding the killer who stabbed Dr. Felix McClure, late of Wolsey College.

This is the 2nd book by Colin Dexter I've read. It rolls along much like the 1st one I read in that it seems to take a while to move along sometimes. That's the worst of it though. It is loaded with clever dialogue. The characters stay true to their personalities, there is no in your face super graphic violence or sex, the chapters each begin with a literary quotation (real and otherwise), and the chapters are rather short. This is great for me because I just read as I can, so knowing I can at least make it through one chapter in the time I have is wonderful! The story itself is a typical murder mystery set in modern times (90's or so). And in the true fashion of British murder mysteries by the end of the book there's been more than one. The thing I enjoy the most is the relationship between Morse and Lewis. Lots of clever and witty banter and Dexter has them playing off each other quite well. If you've never read Colin Dexter this would be a good one to start with.

I've been a great fan of the Morse BBC series for years. I even own the complete series on DVD and have rewatched all episodes endlessly yet this is the first Morse book I've ever purchased. I think I was always afraid that the written word would be somehow less than. Very happy to be so wrong. I'm still in love with the John Thaw portrayal of Morse but there are some things that you can have drawn out with the printed word that might be rushed through because of time constraints in television. I won't say one medium is better but if you've enjoyed the series the books are well worth your time.

Yes, there are murders and villains and red herrings in "Daughters," but plot is never the main attraction in a Colin Dexter mystery. The real appeal is twofold: 1) Dexter’s tetchy protagonist, Chief Inspector Morse, who relishes classical music, drinking, smoking, and women – not necessarily in that order; and 2) Dexter’s contagious love of the English language. If you dig masterful prose with your homicide investigations, Dexter is your man. He’s certainly mine.

I've followed Inspector Morse on TV and thought I'd enjoy the books. I'll read more of Mr. Dexters' books with Inspector Morse and the subject
I also like the "young" Morse on the British program "Endeavor".

Intelligent mystery as always in this series but some of it quite beyond me, which I find annoying. In the end, Morse is a collection of weaknesses - drinking, smoking, women, indeciveness, cheapness - so his claimed attractiveness is questionable. Yet I keep reading the series . . . .

I am a fan of Morse on the PBS series and that is my first encounter with the character. I tried this book because of a review and the fact that I had never read a book with Morse. I enjoyed the read and plan to try another. I read this using an e-reader and the built-in dictionary was quite useful because Dexter provided about three words per page that I needed to look-up.
The plot is good as is the character development, and the writing is excellent.

After enjoying the PBS series, I was curious about the books the series was drawn from. I was not disappointed. As is often the case, the book offers details and insights into the characters that must be condensed for the screen/TV version. It was a delightful read.
Have always enjoyed the PBS presentations of Inspector Morse episodes and am not disappointed in this mystery.
I would recommend this book to mystery lovers and plan to read more of Inspector Morse.
