The sergeant major’s daughter. Everyone was eager to put felicity in her place. Her cousin Amaryllis made it clear that Felicity did not belong in the fashionable drawing rooms of the great country house of Cheynings.

A great book with a strong, independent heroine ala Jo March in Little Women. Walsh is a winner of the RNA award too - though not for this book. Wonderful, absolutely wonderful!

From the outset it was apparent that the company was unsure how far her presence should be acknowledged f a governess. They obviously thought it a very odd quirk of Stayne’s to require her attendance at dinner-as did Amaryllis. Felicity felt a certain degree of sympathy with them in their dilemma, since the Earl, having all but commanded her attendance, made not the least push to engage her interest.

The Sergeant Major's Daughter. By (author) Sheila Walsh. Her daughter is getting married to just the right guy, her husband's company has kept them financially thriving for years, her son is a freshman in high school, playing football and doing well, and the ministry she started is keeping her busy as she reaches out to those with "broken hearts. Then it all falls apart.

Walsh is a winner of the RNA award too - though not for this book. Teen and Young Adult. Literature & Fiction. Mystery & Thriller. 1977) A novel by Sheila Walsh. After spending her early years as an army daughter, Felicity Vale is orphaned at Waterloo. Returning to England, and with no private means, she takes charge of the young son of her cousin, Amaryllis.

Sheila Walsh, née Sheila Frances O'Nions (10 October 1928 – 20 January 2009) was a British writer of romance novels from 1975 to 2001; she also wrote as Sophie Leyton. In 1971, Sheila joined the Southport Writers' Circle and was elected life president in 1986  .

EVERYONE WAS EAGER TO PUT FELICITY IN HER PLACE Her cousin Amaryllis made it clear that Felicity did not belong in the fashionable drawing rooms of the great country house of Cheynings. Jamie, the six-year-old heir to Cheynings, marked Felicity as his latest victim in a long series of routed governesses. Lord Stayne, the infuriatingly handsome master of Cheynings, coldly informed her that her ideas and opinions were of no earthly interest to a supremely self-confident male like himself. And the vile Captain Hardman, whose devious designs Felicity threatened, did not bother to mask his intentions of removing her from his path by either brutal force or contemptible cunning. Felicity, however, had her own notions about what a woman's place should be-as she set out on a campaign of conquest with only her wit and wiles as weapons, and love as a very treacherous ally....

This was an enjoyable romance, though not up to the standard of her The Golden Songbird. I liked the slow romance and the other characters. But the villain seemed too extreme, predictable and a bit repetitive. The heroine comes across as a bit stupid rather than courageous when she confronts him in his own home after evidence that he is ruthlessly evil and has no respect for women. I lost a bit of respect for her myself. The story is the typical poor relation who is treated poorly (sorry about the pun) but in the end, through guts and personality, wins over the entire household from problem child, to spoiled lady of the house, to the arrogant brooding lord, not to mention various servants, villagers, and eccentric uncles. In the end she is a heroine in distress and nearly ends in flames, but the reformed lord saves her. An easy, light read.

Sheila Walsh writes well. This book kept me enthralled. I was not tempted to look ahead. I did stay for the HEA at the very end. However, SPOILERS: the villain was nasty. He was threatening throughout, responsible for lashings and fires and general intimidation. In spite of this, and because of it, the heroine was sooooo strong and proud that she put herself in jeopardy again and again. This did not make for a happy read IMO. Romance was a small part of the story. One drunken kiss from an often-angry lord, and a few wishful glances from both H&h, accounted for most of it until the very last pages.

I love all of Sheila Walsh's book but this one is my favorite. I read it over and over again. It has humor, suspense, love and the heroine of the book is so enjoyable. I would highly recommend this book. I have had it since it came out in the l980 and it is still just as enjoyable now as it was then

At five feet, ten inches in bare feet, skin so brown that that it made her "eyes shine like jewels" and a happy, spirited personality, Felicity Vale was now orphaned with little money. She had returned to England to visit her cousin Amaryllis and offer the relative her assistance. Initially, she wasn't welcomed.

Her one fault, if you could call it that, was to take up for the underdog. Because of that issue, she tended to say and do things that did not conform with how a lady should act. And in that same mindset, she met and butted heads with the lord of the manner. Lord Stayne was a contented man until Felicity shamed him into developing a conscience.

There was the nasty villain Captain Hardman and his despicable young son, a fop by the name of Tristram Dytton whom sounded like Elmer Fudd, the haughty Mrs. Lipscombe and her daughter, Lucinda-I-Want-Lord-Stayne and other secondary characters to move the story along.

This was a slow-paced old-style Regency but I enjoyed reading about what Felicity was going to do next. And I loved watching the stuffy Lord Stayne slowly being worn down even though Felicity never intended for this to happen. She simply wanted goodness all-around.

An enjoyable Regency, with real character change for the hero. The heroine is unique, sturdy, and memorable, and getting to know her is the highlight of the book. As said in other reviews, the villain is too awful for a comfortable read, though probably true to the times. This novel goes on my 'probably read again in a couple of years' shelf, and I recommend it for readers who enjoy a fairly realistic Regency romance.
