The author's first book of short stories, including the first four stories published in The New Yorker. Winner, PEN/Hemingway Award for First Fiction.

Mason's latest, based on the real-life experiences of her father-in-law, is fascinating and intensely intimate. The author's first book of short stories, including the first four stories published in The New Yorker. Zigzagging down a Wild Trail.

Set in the apocalyptic atmosphere of the turn of this century, this.

Only 1 left in stock (more on the way). I found the most interesting part of the book to be learning about the customs and beliefs of people during this time period – that the men were served first at every meal, that women worked in the fields as well as the men, that finding a ‘feather crown’ inside a pillow was an omen of death. The look back in time was definitely the most compelling part of the story for me.

Bobbie Ann Mason (born May 1, 1940) is an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and literary critic from Kentucky. Her memoir was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. A child of Wilburn and Christina Mason, Bobbie Ann Mason grew up on her family's dairy farm outside of Mayfield, Kentucky with four siblings. SHILOH by Bobbie Ann Mason. Leroy Moffitt's wife, Norma Jean, is working on her pectorals. Norma comes from the Normans, They were invaders," she says. She closes her book and looks hard at Leroy. She lifts three-pound dumbbells to warm up, then progresses to a twenty-pound barbell. I'll go to Shiloh with you if you'll stop staring at m. On Sunday, Norma Jean packs a picnic and they go to Shiloh.

MASON, Bobbie Ann. Nationality: American. Born: Mayfield, Kentucky, 1 May 1940. Feather Crowns is perhaps Mason's weakest novel to date. In this novel, she veers away from the people and times she knows so well and attempts to put some of the same themes to work back at the turn of the century with a family that bore North America's first set of quintuplets. The couple tours with them like a sideshow act.

In turn-of-the-century Kentucky, Christianna and James Wheeler have the first recorded North American quintuplets, leading to an early version of the media circus. By the author of In Country. 75,000 first printing. $100,000 ad/promo. Tour.

I wonder if Mason wrote this novel as a means to shed her reputation as a "minimalist." She maintains some of the hallmarks of minimalism, such as an acute attention to the mundane, but violates the category by "over-reporting" what happens. I have never read so much about eating, food, and breast-feeding. The unfortunate thing is that the historical details this novel works from are in themselves interesting.

The protagonist's "epiphany" at the end does not prove overly satisfying. If you would like to read Mason at her best, buy a copy of Shiloh and Other Stories.

I was very pleased with the promt service and excellent quality of this book. Seller highly recommended!
Ii found this brand new unread copy of the book in my book shelves and have no idea how it got there. I LOVED her writing from the first paragraph. It's unusual to find a young writer that has the ability to allow you to meet the character and place you at a time and place in less than a paragraph. She published the book in 1993 and had previously published 3-4 books and/or short stories. Her writing flows beautifully and is extremely readable. Initially the size of book was a little intimidating but once I started reading it I found it hard to put down. The subject matter was different and interesting and I sympathized with the mother for her ignorance or her total initial ignorant disregard as to the safety of her babies. But that said, it implies that the girl would know what steps to take (or not) following the birth of a first born baby (or in this case 5 of them). I finished the book in less than 3 days. I have been disappointed with the quality and subject matter for the last ten years and most of the books I have started are left unread and discarded. The writing is awful as is the subject matter and I find my time is not worth taking the time to finish the book. This book captivated me from the beginning to the end and I believe that was due not only for the plot development but also for sensitivity as to the subject matter and the expressive and thoughtful writing that gave life to the book.
