I’m going to look a complete idiot in church this morning with this big bruise. hing I can do, do you think?’. Caroline traced her finger along his jawline and made him wince. Oh sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt. It’s swollen too, that ice we used last night didn’t have the desired effect, did it? There won’t be many rectors conducting matins this morning with a swollen jaw got in a pub brawl. It wasn’t a brawl, darling

The third Turnham Malpas novel from bestselling author Rebecca Shaw . Brash Craddock Fitch up at the Big House seems determined to make his mark on the village - and the village is determined to put him in his place.

This book is third in the 'village' series about a fictional place in England called Turnham Malpas. It features the daily lives and problems of a fairly large cast, who are listed in the front of the book, and there's even a map showing where they all live. This particular novel focuses quite a bit on Craddock Fitch, the 'nouveau riche' (but rather brash) owner of the Big House. But we also catch up on the lives of Peter (the Rector) and his wife Caroline, and many others

Anyone who has enjoyed the Miss Read books will enjoy these "Village" books. They are like a sort of updated, more contemporary version - not so modern that we are dealing with the sort of "raw life" we get shoved down our necks in soap operas and a lot of contemporary fiction - these books deal with things in a less confrontational way. A gentle and more relaxing read - which is exactly what I need.

Quote: "Please, Rector, please sit down." Mr Fitch sat at his desk chair. "I suppose you saw my effigy?"

A third good work in this series by Rebecca Shaw. More drama, more eccentric villagers, more legal battles. All good things.
