Guy de Maupassant was a popular French writer in the 19th century. He was one of the first writers to write short stories. Many of his stories were set during the Franco-Prussian war. His stories show the futility of war and war's effects on the innocent. Bel Ami, published in 1885, is the story of journalist Georges Duroy. In my opinion, Duroy is no more of a scoundrel than the women who love him. The least attractive thing that he does is to marry a young, nieve girl in the end. He is experienced enough to allow this young girl all of the time that she needs to become a women. He is patient and willing to spoil her until she comes around to his way of thinking.

Exploring his world, Guy de Maupassant stretches the scope of the novel form. This book, which sympathetically treats its heroine's journey from innocent girlhood through the disillusionment of an unfortunate marriage and ends with her subsequent widowhood, records what Maupassant had observed as a child, the little dramas and daily preoccupations of ordinary people. Bel-Ami, the amiable but amoral hero of the novel, has become a standard literary personification of an ambitious opportunist. Pierre et Jean is the tale of a man's tragic jealousy of his half-brother, who is the child of their mother's adultery.

Though firmly set in 1880s Paris, Maupassant's gripping story of an amoral journalist on the make could, with only slight modifications of detail, be updated to the 1960s, to the Reagan-Thatcher years, or maybe to the present day. Anti-hero Georges Duroy is a down-at-heel ex-soldier of no particular talent.
