The shimmering, cloud-covered planet of Venus conceals a wondrous secret: the strikingly beautiful yet deadly world of Amtor. In Amtor, cities of immortal beings flourish in giant trees reaching thousands of feet into the sky; ferocious beasts stalk the wilderness below; rare flashes of sunlight precipitate devastating storms; and the inhabitants believe their world is saucer-shaped with a fiery center and an icy rim. Stranded on Amtor after his spaceship crashes, astronaut Carson Napier is swept into a world where revolution is ripe, the love of a princess carries a dear price, and death can come as easily from the blade of a sword as from the ray of a futuristic gun.

(I'm going to copy'n'paste this one into all of my Carson of Venus reviews)

Obviously Burroughs' two most famous creations are Tarzan and John Carter of Mars, but for me, I find his Carson of Venus books to be the most enjoyable of anything he wrote about.

Carson is a manly man, but lacks completely Carter's astonishing ego, and Tarzan's tremendous strength. He is modest, yet confident, and definitely not a super man---which makes his exploits that much more exciting and heroic.

The Carson of Venus series is one of those sadly all-too-common intentions of the Golden Age of SF and Fantasy which was cut short in its prime.

Carson, we hardly knew ya.

PLEASE NOTE: This review is only about the CreateSpace edition of Pirates of Venus, not to the book itself.

This edition is junk. These CreateSpace editions contain weird, homemade-looking pages wrapped up in lousy cover art. They tend to look like they were slapped together on WordPerfect, circa 1990, and printed on someone's home DeskJet printer. For reasons known only to the CreateSpace staff, the pages are formatted without indentation and with lines skipped between paragraphs. The books tend to be awkward sizes and odd dimensions, too, for no apparent reason. I've seen several CreateSpace editions of books, and this one is exceptionally bad.

Bizarrely, CreateSpace doesn't even include a title page or indicia (nor any indication of the original publication date), the book simply begins immediately inside the front cover, as if a blank page might have eaten into the company's profits a bit too much. Even the typeface is ugly and off-putting. Crummy editions of great books are disrespectful travesties.

However, there is an excellent paperback edition of Pirates of Venus put out by Bison Books, also readily available from Amazon for just a few dollars more. It includes very nice cover art, excellent interior illustrations, brief and readable introduction and afterward, a fantastic map of Burroughs' Venus, and a helpful glossary of Venusian terms, geographical terms, and character names. Go read that one instead.

45 years ago I read all the great author Edgar Rice Burroughs (one of my favorite authors) John Carter Mars series SF opera series books. All were great 5 stars. Another SF /fantasy opera series he did is the Carson Napier Venus series.

Pirates of Venus was a 173 page burner I read in 2 days. A lot of fun, excitement and suspense as Burroughs creates another hostile habitable world.

I wont ruin the story for you just give you a few tid bits. Carson Napier a rich, handsome blond haired, blue eyed man has the idea of exploring Mars. With the help of his friends and lots of money he has a sloping rocket rail system and a huge double walled projectile made for him to be shot toward Mars. Unfortunately the Moon's gravitational pull is not calculated . He just misses crashing on the Moon, and he is thrown toward the sun and impending vaporization. Luckily Venus's gravity captures the projectile and Carson is able to eventually parachute out over Venus.

Here Burroughs gives the reader a rich description of Venus with its thousand plus foot trees, vicious giant spiders, vicious ground beasts, flying birdmen strong enough to carry off people, and different humanoid tribes.

Carson is found by a human tribe of people and is under nice house arrest but treated very well. He is seen and sees a beautiful virgin 18 year old, daughter of the king.

I wont ruin the story by saying too much more.

Eventually he becomes a pirate on a ship on the ocean of Venus against an evil empire, not the good people who first captured him. He must rescue the captive princess. I won't ruin the great ending just say it sets up the next book beautifully.

Edgar Rice Burroughs John Carter Mars series was so good... 5 stars that some of the reviewers gave Pirates Off Venus a slightly lower rating. Not me. I loved this book just as much and can't wait to get the next in the Venus series. 5 stars and proudly added to our family library.

P.S. This has nothing to do with the quality of Pirates of Venus. The paperback I bought was an old edition by Ace books taken from the Hardcover 1934. The paperback was in good shape but because of its age on cheaper paper the inside is heavily tanned and the book has an odor to it common to older cheaper paper books. It will get worse as time goes on. The reader may want to invest more money to get a better quality of paper in a book if accumulating an Edgar Rice Burroughs collection.

Edgar Rice Burroughs takes his universal prototype hero to another world, Venus this time. It is a one way trip and unintended. It is interesting that ERB had a pretty dim view of space travel as a practical means of conveyance. Unless I've forgotten something all of his protagonists who attempted space travel ended up missing their goals. New locales, exotic plants and animals - falls in love with the forbidden Emperors Daughter (she's under age for Venus). Typical ERB romance - missed signals frustration - true love - the usual fare. There are clearly better ERB novels but this one is not without it's charm. Seems a little shorter than most but not by much.

You'll especially like the Pirates of Venus! A shame that Burroughs didn't write more books about Venus, like he did for the planet of Mars. Also it's hard to believe that this story was written 80-plus years ago, as he tells about a trip in a rocket ship to hopefully get to Mars but ends up on Venus. Also it was highly enjoyable getting to read the second book of three about the Mucker, whose adventures are always enjoyable! One just has to get used to the way the Mucker sometimes speaks. I would recommend first reading book number one in the Mucker trilogy.

The production of this vol and their 2nd Lost on Venus is very nice. The introduction by Paul Wilson is very nice. This would be a really nice set to acquire, BUT...... when I wrote to the publisher - Univ of Nebraska Press - they informed me that they have NO plans to continue publishing the rest of the series! YUK!!! They have a beautiful start, and are leaving it hanging. Still, I am glad to have both, because ERB is just a real joy to read.
