It had been many many years since I last read any Mark Twain, but this certainly didn't disappoint. It's a short, quick read but packed to the gills with his typical wit and veiled wisdom. I read this on "recommendation" of a devotional for marriage preparation I read some months ago and I think it's a great illustration of how a man and wife grow together over time. At first Adam is suspicious and confused about Eve and she is likewise confused by him. Their love and devotion to each other grows throughout the book (which loosely parallels the first several chapters of Genesis).

Everyone should have read this one by now, but if you're among the few who have somehow overlooked this MT classic, do yourself a favor and buy this edition. It has both the diaries of Adam and Eve, originally published separately, in one volume.

If you've ever been in a relationship, or ever plan to be in a relationship, or need a good reason to AVOID being in a relationship, this is the book for you! Mark Twain at his best!

Another excellent Samuel Clemons writing. I have not laughed so hard in many months when my computer reads this to me.

This USED to be part of "Letters From The Earth", which is another great text by Mr. Clemons. I recommend both books if you wish to see a cultural perspective of some older stories which emanated from some great theological writings. (WARNING: If you are offended by any other perspective on religion other than your own, do NOT get either book.

This was a light humorous account of the first meeting of a man and a woman in the garden of Eden. Twain's interpretation suggests that the woman was more moved by the beauty around her, while the man was more concerned about testing and learning. In the beginning the woman chases the man only to find he has rejected her. The man does not seem to understand why the woman likes and accepts all the living creatures, she is daring while he is cautious and skeptical of all things and states, "I consider it a calamity, that is a good example of the lack of harmony that prevails in our views of things". Twain's knowledge of how a man versus a woman perceives the world was amusing yet in many ways true, but with out the balance of the two coming together there is no whole.

The beginning of the book from Adam's diary, was an explanation of how the man (Adam) perceived new life, his first born son 'Cain' and Adams ignorance of what the child was. Twain's hypothesis of Adams observations involving the progression of the child from a wrinkled newborn to a fully erect child was interesting and far fetched.

This is a wonderfully funny book.

Mark Twain brings out the difference between men and women in the best, wittiest way. Adam especially is hilarious and you fall in love with him despite him taking up only 10% of the book and despite you being a woman and feeling like you really shouldn't like this hopeless oaf.

I found myself wishing there was a a hardcover of this book available at the local book store so that I could buy five of them and lend them all over the land.

Read it- its short and it will make your day.

I understand that Mark Twain wrote this to celebrate his love for his wife; and according to some critics this work is his best attempt at writing in the female voice and from the female prospective. There are portions of the tale which made me laugh right out loud not only at the well crafted dichotomy between the male and female minds, but also at how well Twain was able to nail the common, and apparently eternal, misunderstandings men and women have about each other. This story is a love story, have no doubt about that, and in the hands of a master like Twain the common vision of love as a theme is transformed into a timeless commentary on discovering, adapting to, appreciating, and ultimately longing for the love of your life.

My spouse and I loved this book so much we chose it as the only reading in our wedding, and so I completely agree that it would make a great wedding or anniversary gift. It is perhaps the best thing Twain ever wrote, because it is everything: hilarious, tragic, cynical, tender, and hopeful. Apparently, Twain started this before his wife's death and came back to it again afterwards, which I think is why there is so much passion and reflection in the story. There are earlier versions that were published in serial format and are also worth reading.

In essence, this is the first and the last love story, as Eve says. And so it is also everyone's love story. The development of Adam and Eve's relationship is the main focus here, but I disagree that Twain's views about God are not here, too. Whereas Adam seems content to just follow orders, it's Eve's questioning of God and The Fall that adds such depth to the story. This piece really is about the best and worst not only of the human race, but of God as well, told in a way that makes you realize why Twain is probably the best writer this country will ever see. It's only a 45 minute read, but it's one that you'll treasure.
To better understand the behaviors of Adam and Eve - main characters of Jim Jarmusch's upcoming fillm, "Last Lovers Left Alive", I purchased Mark Twain's Diaries of Adam and Eve. Mr. Jarmusch had mentioned Twain's book in an interview after the screening. Later, a friend also mentioned that Twain's book was the basis of a long-running musical play, "The Apple Tree". In any event, the diaries are a delightful, amusing read that highlights the essential differences between male and female.
