Do not waste your time and money on this dreadful mistranslation. It's a piece of nonsense. The author turns d'Annunzio's thick lush prose into incomprehensible nonsense. It often reads like those instructions you get with certain Asian products; you suspect it was translated by a computer.

For starters, she picks many of her vocabulary words from a thesaurus, no matter how much nonsense ensues.

"He saw a shadow appear at the rim of the stair which coasts the house." ( p. 11)
"...the muscles under his skin trembled like the cords of the arch after the twang." (p. 86)
"...complied to his heart like a sticky adhesive." (p. 104)
"Every opera of charity is sacred." (p. 38)
"...a very clear odor was felt like where one shakes a bush." (p. 193)
"...it seemed like racy sailboats." (p. 103)
"...the soul became wordly." (p. 99)
"...convalescing from a mortal wound." (p. 147)
"...seeing perhaps the beautiful blond animal jumping around the albatross, under the flowering plants." (p. 142)

She has no idea how to punctuate. Quote marks, commas, and semicolons are capriciously sprinkled around, making sentences difficult to decipher. ("...a big bunch of white, yellow, rose, roses." p. 116) Instead of writing "the 1600s" or "the 1700s," she writes centuries as "the 600's" and "the 700's."

We are supposed to be reading the story of handsome young Count Andrea Sperelli as he moves about in a rich splendid world of Roman aristocracy in 1885, and we want to follow his two love affairs, but it's impossible. We are always distracted by bizarre spellings and newly-coined words: imennsa, robbiesque, colymelock, reticenses, dem-mondraines, brocase, bair, nocvelette, langer, lenteen.

I knew I was supposed to be reading thick, lush perfurmed Art Nouveau rapture, but what I got was more often nonstop surrealism and dada imagery: a fluting shadow? a blond audience? a white rainbow?

And she doesn't seem to realize that she needs to translate the names of famous people instead of giving us Pietro Paalo Rubens, Ludovico Beethoven, Alberto Durero, Sekbastien (and Sebastini) Bach, Teofile Gautier, Guiseppe Hayden, Carlo Beaudelaire, Luigi Romeau, and Era and Leandra (which isn't even their correct names in Italian).

For some reason she doesn't bother to translate "Settembre" much of the time. She loves to capitalize the names of flowers. A page with only two spelling errors is to be considered clean.

I feel horribly ripped-off by this ludicrous piece of word-slop, and I'm warning you not to follow suit. I assume this is a vanity e-book which no editor or proofreader ever got a chance to correct. Trust me and go for a different, accurate translation of this novel.

This version is not from any official publisher. Instead they used a PDF that can be found on the internet of this book and then print it for you. The cover is pixelated, the italian switches to english from time to time, and the sentences and paragraphs end randomly. On the last page it even says this product was printed the day I ordered it. I didn't pay money to have the online pdf (with mistakes) printed into a hard copy for me.

Questo libro mi piace. Grazie

This translation is an embarrassment, the worst I have ever encountered in 5 decades of reading and teaching world literature. The translator does not seem to be a native speaker of English, and the editing is execrable: misspellings, inconsistencies, grammatical errors. Opt for the recent Penguin version.

If you are looking for an italian classic just read this. Elegance and erotism mixed in a decadent "hig society". Splendid printed edition.
