But history tells us that the great songs (and great books, plays and other artistic vehicles) that speak to the current public moment have an enduring and vital role - all the more so when they are emotionally reflective rather than ideologically reflexive.

Don D. Doyle reminds us that, at least in the beginning, the Civil War was not seen as a challenge to slavery. Rather, it appeared to be about the right of a people, in the words of Jefferson to alter and abolish any government which was destructive of the ends to which it had been dedicated. Southern diplomats abroad encouraged this interpretation and most of Europe acquiesced.

The presidential race is deadlocked-until murder tips the scale

The presidential race is deadlocked-until murder tips the scale. Now attorney Janelle Harcourt finds evidence implicating the presidential front-runner in the shadowy background of a high-level CIA video file.

You don’t have to be American. Abraham was not a citizen of Sodom or Gomorrah. The stories and prophetic writings of the Old Testament are replete with examples of national sin. Can a nation ever sin? If so, how can it be forgiven? The stories and prophetic writings of the Old Testament are replete with examples of national sin. There are certainly stories of God dealing with individuals, but, on the whole, His attention seems to be directed to Israel and other nations as a whole. The promises and pledges are made to a collective people and the chastisement falls on the whole nation as well.

Tim McGraw and his longtime friend Jon Meacham, a Pulitzer-Prize winning biographer, wrote a new book, Songs of America: Patriotism, Protest, and the Music That Made a Nation, that explores the history of the United States through song. Reading Jon’s last book, Soul of America, I got to thinking about how music really marks times in people’s lives, and not necessarily inflection points or seminal moments in people’s lives, but mundane, everyday moments a song can put you back into, explains the Humble and Kind singer, who will perform some of the featured songs during the 7-city.

The presidential race is deadlocked--until murder tips the scale. Now attorney Janelle Harcourt finds evidence implicating the presidential front-runner in the shadowy background of a high-level CIA video file. Her investigation links three of the nation's most powerful political figures in a most unimaginable way. This trio is intent to use all of their power to silence the truth.

This well written political thriller has a unique way of presenting the plot. The real story is not focused on the President, candidates seeking the highest office in the land, or even an appointment to the Supreme Court. These lofty characters take a back seat to an Austin radical, his girlfriend (Campaign Coordinator), an unremarkable FBI agent. Add a poor guy locked away to never see the light of day, and you have The Sins of a Nation.
I turned off the TV and stayed up to read this one!

How would you like to be kidnapped, hooded, restrained and find yourself in a foreign jail cell without access to your loved ones or your country? The book begins with a mysterious "rendition" and piles on more twists and turns as Don weaves a tale of power politics and raw ambition and its effects on well paid employees of the United States Government and its affiliates. Each character is developed so that their good intentions and their greed and ambition as well as their fear and willingness to break the laws of man and nature are lain bare for the reader to examine. The author leaves it to the reader to decide who to trust and who to fear and as the story takes us through its web of power politics, we are faced with reasons to dislike, distrust and perhaps trust again in each character as we learn more about them.

The book is like a parallel universe finding its anchor in realpolitik as we experience it daily. Don McGraw lets each character tell his or her story and allows us to follow each protaganist as they seek the best outcome for themselves with individual taking first priority and the country taking second priority, at least at first. The language and dialogue is basic and not all convoluted with psychobabble and unecessary embelishment. Likewise, the scenes are fleshed out to the point required to tell the story. The author does not find it necessary to "fill in the blanks" for the reader. He lets the story take us on its own merits with our participation as observers before we get to know the characters and then we take sides. How do we know if we chose the right side? How does the heroine know if she chose the right side? In whom can we confide when we bear dark secrets that can hurt those in places of insurmountable power? This mystery about who to trust forms the underlying magic of the story as it unfolds without the gratuitous sex scenes, troubling images of torture and unecessary foul language that some authors feel required to include in novels today. Yes, those things go on, and they may be happening behind closed doors in this story, but the author has realized that to sell his novel with sensationalism would detract from its uniqueness.

The tale told by Don McGraw is plausible. It could happen to you or someone you know. You may be faced with making similar decisions on who to trust as face the characters in this book. The power of our great nation is misplaced when people hide behind the "its", the faceless front of its bureaucracy. I forget who said that it is tough to write good fiction today because the truth can be so incredible. Don McGraw has made a fine go of it with "Sins Of A Nation", his first novel.

John McCord, a Republican senator is hoping to gain nomination for president and our main character Janelle Harcourt is a young lawyer who feels she has found her dream job working for Mr. McCord, or is it really a nightmare? The presidential race is always exciting but perhaps a little shady as the nominees forge forward, but just how far will some go to achieve their future of power and fame? When a murder is committed and Janelle uncovers evidence that links her boss to the crime all bets are off. Janelle is thrown into a world where those she loves are endangered and she battles to find whom she can really trust. As her world is turned upside down as one dark secret leads to another and the race is on to save perhaps the only one Janelle can believe in and love. Or is it too late? Exciting!
I have to say that I usually am not a big fan of political thrillers but this book is so tightly written that it draws you completely into the story right from the start. The main character Janelle is not only likeable but easy to identify with bringing the story down to citizen level. You know a 'we the people,' person. I loved that. It is always a plus when an author can achieve that goal, especially in a book that has major characters that maybe out of reach to some readers in identifying with. Great job! I also liked the way Mr. McGraw twists the story this way and that leading you astray and wondering, why setting you up for another surprise. This is a very good book; one of greed, murder, and loyalty that is taken to the highest levels and bringing you with it. Well worth your time.

Interesting plot but could not get past the grammatical and spelling errors. Two examples are: 1. A sentence containing a phrase about not being able to "bare listening to..." Should have been "bear". 2. Another sentence containing a reference to an "infernal blazing away" or something like that. It should have been "inferno". These and other spelling and grammatical errors took me right out of the story. It's too bad authors don't submit their works to a good copy editor before publishing. I wonder if this book was self-published. Often self-pubbing authors skip this crucial step. Too bad these mistakes ruined an interesting story.

This book leaves you thinking "Hey this could very well happen" It has all the makings for a great movie! The author gives you a real sense of Austin and politics that whether fiction or not seem real. The characters are rich and you instantly visualize them as you run and hide and uncover new information. Yes this is absolutely one to pick up, don't worry if you can't put it down until the end.
