He had risen to his feet, and was now limping up and down the rough floor, pausing here and there to accent a phrase with two uplifted fists, raising his voice in the crescendo of unmistakable parody as he reached the end of the peroration.

MICHAEL’S MOUNTAINThe road to Mont Saint-Michel was simple, for it stretched in a series of straight lines over the flatness of the reclaimed sea land the danger of the journey, which forced Hearne to follow the road itself and not trust himself to the emptiness of the miles of open grass and vegetable fields. Flat as a pancake, he said to himself in disgust, and there was just about as much cover as a fly would find in a stroll over a pancake. One thing he could be thankful for: he wasn’t the only person on this road. Report an error in the book. Three hours ago he had stood on English earth.

Occupied Brittany, 1940...Hearne looked at the unfamiliar watch on his wrist. Three hours ago he had stood on English soil and had been Martin Hearne, now he was Bertrand Corlayy, with twenty-six years of another man's life reduced to headings and sub-headings in his memory. From now on he would have to speak and think in French!

GoodLike
This is an old favorite of mine which I have read several times over the years. It seems somewhat plodding today in comparison with some of the intense action thrillers out now, but it is true to the atmosphere of France in 1940 when the German occupation was new. The dark threat of the war that we know continued for five more years hovers over the story. The characters are not fully developed, perhaps, but are true to form: the French and Brits honest, upright, and patriotic against the Germans who threaten their existence. There is also the touch of those French who were sympathetic to the Reich and how they were looked upon by other Frenchmen. It's a good story with just enough suspense and drama. The story does not rely on gadgets and technology as do many spy stories today, but on the people who did things the hard, old-fashioned way, the only way available to them.

Martin Hearn is a British agent assigned to Brittany during WWI his double was a captured Breton, Bertrand Corlay, working for the Germans. Hearns slips into the role of Corlay and adventures follow. Helen Macinnes is a master story teller and the book is a festival of surprises and intrigue with the Germans portrayed as the ultimate evil. There is a beautiful Breton Mata Hari, Gestao and SS along with the good guys in the budding French underground. The best part of the book is the feeling for the attitude of Europeans subjected to Nazi rule during that period in world history when it was not clear that anyone could prevail over the Germans. People's lives and hopes for the future hung on very slender threads.

As time advances, and old generations die away, history becomes distorted through the filters of the current generation. Books such as these reflect real events, real attitudes, real people who dealt with the unthinkable to the best of their ability at the time. It's easy to misjudge the past from our vantage point and those things we think undesirable we deny or ridicule.
These books should remain accessible to all to remind us of these facts. We need to remember that what is real for us today may not be believed in future decades either.

I LOVED this book! Couldn't put it down. I'd never heard of Helen MacInnes until a couple of weeks ago and this was the first book of her's that I've read - ordered another one as soon as I'd finished it. Get this book if you like tales of intrigue and danger, with a handsome man and an intriguing place added to the mix. I've just started the second Helen MacInnes book that I ordered and I think it's going to be as spell-binding as Assignment in Brittany. I'll let you know!
Very Old Chap
"Assignment in Brittany" has always been one of my favorite books, and now I have the Ebook version. Having read this book last about 30 years ago, I find that it still retains all its wonderful descriptiveness and thrilling pace. "Assignment..." must have been thoroughly researched, as it was used to train WWII agents before they parachuted into France. The authentic painting of people, places, customs, etc. of Northern France is quite amazing. I have never been so happy to find a beloved book as when I found that "Assignment in Brittany" had been turned into this Ebook.
Please, Amazon, bring out Helen MacInnes many other great books, especially "While Still We Live." Although many of these books are available in Brittain, they are not available in the USA as Ebooks.

Helen MacInnes writes great books. Have complete collection of her books in paperback but was wanting to get the digital ones for my Kindle. Am so glad they have finally digitized them! This is one of her best! An undercover agent who is a doppleganger of a Frenchman who has been injured and is out of the war is sent in as the Frenchman to connect with members of the French Underground to coordinate flow of useful info for the Allies and underground attacks when the invasion of France happens. His position is jeopardized when he learns the Frenchman had been working with the Nazis and he is expected to continue that work.

Set in occupied France in WW2, the book is a great read. MacInnes is just a good writer, and she knows very much about the subject, being married to a MI 6 British intelligence agent. I don't think this was as gripping as <While We Still Live>, which some experts later thought was almost "too close" to the real thing. That said, <Assignment in Brittany> was a real page turner. The reader can rely on the MacInnes works to be free of grammatical errors, poor diction, bad editing. Her dialogue is as fresh and witty as Dorothy Sayers or Ngaio Marsh, both contemporaries. That's what you get from someone educated at University College, London and the University of Glasgow, and who was married to a classics scholar turned spy.
As I sat in my chair reading ,the room vanished and my concerns rose as I was not sure how we got into the predicament and how to get out safely. That is the beauty of the mind and the author. You are transported without any reason to the action and situations transfixed by only the use of words. Great read!
