Air Force Academy Cadet Tony Hahl is hazed by an upperclassman, Geoff Kempwerth. By twisting the honor system and with the help of Colonel Clifford Meisenheimer, Kempwerth nearly gets Hahl expelled, but eleven years later justice triumphs.

Phil Bossert's first novel revolves around the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado and the trials and tribulations of a couple of sophmore cadets(or third degree cadets as they are called). One of the sophmore cadets, Tony Hahl, is accused of an honor offense by a senior by the name of Cadet Geoff Kempwerth. The charge is bogus and created by Kempwerth to railroad the black cadet Hahl out of the Air Force Academy. So far so good. But it goes down hill from there.
Mr. Bossert paints some very one-sided characters. In fact, they are thing as toilet paper. One is good - the other is evil. The reader gets no more from Bossert's character descriptions. The book is also filled with dialouges that are just too good to be true. I have a difficult time believing that a 20-year old cadet would say "aw, shucks", rather than something more colorful.
Furthermore, Mr. Bossert should have his editor court-martialed. The grammatical and spelling errors in the book are just embarrasing. Here are some examples:
"It drove a STEAK through the heart of their relationship"
"He hoped he would get a DESCENT meal after he landed"
Apparently Mr. Bossert's manuscript for this book was refused over 70 times. Maybe he should have stopped trying.
If you really want to read a novel of USAFA you should take in "Victor Padrini - A novel of the United States Air Force Academy" by Mark Pizzimenti. A much better story about USAFA.

For many reasons I recommend this first novel. It is a good read; it offers a first hand look warts and all at an American military academy; it appears at a time of great interest in the young men and women who are willing to subject themselves to severe physical, mental, and emotional challenges and the demands whic are placed on those who would lead American forces in the future.
While the United States Military Academy at West Point has emphasized Duty, Honor, Country, the Air Force Academy (and later the entire Air Force) had adopted as core values Integrity First, Service Above Self, and Excellence in All We Do.
The story line does not take the cheerleading approach. The situations which are developed by the author include those with sexual and racial overtones, the operation of the cadet-run honor and justice systems, and the role of the professional military staff. The issues which must be resolved, if they can be, are confused by the incompetence of some officers, the arrogance of some cadets. Adversity is one thread. The contrasts between those who live the values system and those who evade it are compelling.
This novel, with its intriguing prologue and epilogue, should be read by aspiring applicants who hope to complete any military academy. They must look beyond the free and incomparable education and the apparent glamour of cadet life. A careful reading of this book and a serious self-assessment will bw valuable in reducing the somewhat alarming dropout rates.
The academy admissions officers would do well to make this required reading for incoming cadets.

As a retired Air Force officer, I found "Core Values" to be an outstanding read! The novel raises some basic officership questions in a very interesting way- and the plot and character development is exceptional. I found myself relating the main characters to various Air Force personnel that I encountered in my own military situations. Bossert examines critical issues that we have all had to deal with--and places some of them in a different perspective-- things are not always as they appear. This is a great read for the military community- but it has profound implications for every concerned American.

Phil Bossert gives an exciting "behind the scenes" look at cadet life at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. LtCol Bossert is a masterful writer who keeps the reader on the edge of his seat as he follows the lives of several cadets through their academy experience and onto their Air Force careers. His scenarios are believable, and give "real life" examples of how character (or lack of), is such a critical component of military officership. I especially enjoyed the prologue and epilogue sections involving Gulf War air combat scenarios. I highly recommend!

Phil Bossert offers a detailed look into the difficult but rewarding life of Air Force Academy Cadets. He's chosen to concentrate on one very unique aspect of USAFA, the Cadet Honor Code. Few college students live under such a exacting standard to neither lie, cheat, or steal nor tolerate those who do. His characters must resolve some very difficult issues and the reader is rewarded with a very good story line. This is a worthy effort from a first time published author. As an Academy graduate, I can highly recommend "Core Values".

As a fellow officer with over 18 years of active service, I am very proud of Phil Bossert. His book, Core Values, is a must read. This book captures the true spirit and life of what cadets experience at the Academy. His unique writing style presents scenarios that are real to all of us who wear the uniform. It is important in life to be reminded about Core Values such as honesty and integrity. This book certainly reminds us of that and more. I highly recommend this book.

"Core Values" is a clearly wrought story of young men and women who work, play, learn and love in the Air Force Academy. Here they develop integrity and become the strong core of those who serve our country with honor. Intuitively, I felt that this was a true story wrapped in the language of fiction. Mr. Bossert writes in an easy reading style. A fine book for young and old alike.
One of the best books I have read this year is Core Values by Lt. Col. Phil Bossert. I recommend this book to all former and active duty people. It's very vividly written and easy to understand. It should be required reading at the United States Air Force Academy. Remember, integrity first, service before self, excellence in all we do.
