Only 6 left in stock (more on the way). these are really basic; the PowerPoints are usually only 4-5 slides per chapter, and they are mostly pictures, not summaries of the information, there are usually only about 6 test questions, and they are really basic (. What does AFIS stand for?") and the activites are generally straightforward - very few advanced activities.

I found this to be an excellent resource for information on Forensic Science. It is written in a style that is easy to read and understand. The instructors materials are good and provide additional ideas for me to share with my students.

I would like to give this book a great review. I am using this book in a high school forensics class I am teaching. It is very comprehensive without being overwhelming. My students are really enjoying it, too.

Are you entirely too busy and often feel that it would really be nice to have some help teaching high school Forensic Science? If so, you need to look seriously at the new, second edition of Forensic Science Today. That said, it is important that you not only check out the book, but also the "Instructors Companion" CD that comes with the teacher's edition. This is really a curriculum and not just a book.

It would be easy to dismiss this text from serious consideration if you just paged through the paperback teacher's edition. However, when the book is combined with the support material, a well designed and quite complete course takes shape. This program is thoroughly supported with creative activities, labs, quizzes, and items of interest. It is obvious that the support material was developed by someone who knows students. For one thing, the lab activities could all be done in a high school lab without appropriating the entire department budget.

There is a genuine effort to connect with the student- how can she become a forensic scientist, how can she avoid becoming a crime victim, or how would he approach solving this crime? Another example: the pretest in the first chapter is labeled, "fun quiz," and a student could try to fill it in based on TV programs. This program does not threaten nor insult the student- or the teacher.
PowerPoint files are provided for each chapter; forensic science works particularly well on a screen. The parts of a fingerprint are referenced easily, for example, and a student can see what he is supposed to look for on his microscope slide of a hair. The frames are quite simple in general, but they provide necessary information.

The text itself looks dull: black, white, and some gray. There are lots of somewhat involved tables and flowcharts which break the text into readable sized segments. Unfortunately, most chapters offer few good photos. Happily, there are many case profiles, crimes that were usually solved by Dr. Henry Lee, one of the authors. It is no secret to teachers that stories are motivational, but I was originally a little put off by the writing style until I realized that the cases are unambiguously written, almost more like technical than creative writing. The stories contain few pronouns- just the way we ask the students to answer on the standardized state tests!
In short, if you are looking for a new forensic science curriculum, Forensic Science Today deserves a thorough audition. When I compare my old text to FST, new wins.

Overall the book is a disappointment - basically it has a lot of breadth and no depth. It does cover a wide range of topics; just about every field or discipline of forensice science is covered in the text. However, the chapters lack any real depth (a typical chapter is about 6 pages long with large photos, wide margins and large font size). Much of the chapter is spent explaining how evidence is gathered or processed which isn't necessarily bad, just that it comes at the expense of information on the biology, physiology, chemistry and physics of how the evidence is created and processed. For example, the chapter on fingerprints was 5 pages long, one page of which was a table of methods of visualizing latent fingerprints. There was virtually no mention of the history of fingerprint analysis, how they are formed (genetics vs. physical development in the womb), how latent fingerprints are formed, what components are found in sweat, and only a brief mention of AFIS (not explaining whose prints are in the database, how a search is performed, what is actually being compared and so on) and a brief mention of plastic and visible prints (but not how they are lifted, preserved or enhanced). In short, it's short! This text may be suitable for upper level middle shool or lower level high school students and/or for courses that only intend to broadly survey topics. It is not a textbook that would be useful for upper level high school students or college-aged students. Certainly it wouldn't be appropriate for a course that intends to really delve into topics or fields of forensic science deeply. It isn't even really helpful as an ancillary textbook - other texts I have cover topics in far more depth and detail.

Specifics:

Cons -

The case studies (when presented) are generally very brief.

There are no review questions at the end of the chapters.

No exercises, labs or activities are presented in the text.

There is no companion website.

No references at the end of chapters to books, websites or keystone journal articles (although some of this could be found in the glossary at the end of the book).

Pros -

Cheap - $45 for a softcover text.

The teacher's edition comes with a companion CD that has a few suggested activities or labs, test questions, tips and suggestions and PowerPoints. (Buuuuuut....these are really basic; the PowerPoints are usually only 4-5 slides per chapter, and they are mostly pictures, not summaries of the information, there are usually only about 6 test questions, and they are really basic (e.g. "What does AFIS stand for?") and the activites are generally straightforward - very few advanced activities.)

For a few more dollars there are better textbooks out there. Since this is a first edition, Ihave hopes that it will be beefier in subsequent editions.
