About four years ago Felix Baumgartner ascended to the edge of space in a capsule attached to a helium balloon and jumped towards Earth. The jump marked the end of a seven-year road for technical director Art Thompson, who conceived of the idea in 2005 and wrote an 87-page mission proposal to Red Bull. The company agreed to it in 2007, and by the next year, the team had started building the capsule and training Baumgartner. The five-year training program was necessary to ensure Baumgartner’s safety during the death-defying jump.

There are so many fascinating aspects of space travel that children seem to be drawn to. For some kids, it is the thought of being weightless in space and having to navigate zero gravity that captures their imagination. Other children might be more interested in spaceships and space travel. And on a space shuttle, where there is virtually no gravity, they could jump so high their head would hit the ceiling! The book then explains all the things that are made difficult by the lack of gravity, including eating, sleeping, and going to the bathroom.

Journey Into Space is a BBC Radio science fiction programme written by BBC producer Charles Chilton. It was the last UK radio programme to attract a bigger evening audience than television.

My personal opinion...it's good for who wants to hold a space book at the very first time.

e.guides Space Travel is part of the e.guide series. You may also want to look for e.guides: Dinosaur, Earth and Mummy.

Every page contains e-links that can be used to find additional information online. Whether you are fascinated by breathtaking voyages into outer space or you want to learn more about satellites, there is something here for everyone. I think the e.guides are not just for children, in fact I find them fascinating and learn something new each time I open a new e.guide.

You may enjoy reading about:

The First Satellites
Early Manned Craft
Humans in Space
Space Stations
The Body in Space
Living in Space
The Hubble Space telescope
The Future in Space

This book answers questions like:

What is it like to walk in space?
How are crews trained before they go off on a real mission into space?
What is Space Junk?
Can spiders spin webs while they are weightless in space?

My favorite section of this book includes images from the Hubble Space Telescope. The Cat's Eye and Eagle Nebula are beautiful, while the egg nebula looks rather mysterious.

It is also so wonderful to know about asteroids wandering about in space always willing to hurtle themselves towards earth. There are pictures of places in Arizona were an asteroid hit the earth.

A space timeline is included (1926-2014). Which spacecrafts are scheduled for launch in 2012? This timeline explains future plans for space travel. There is an entire section dedicated to Rocket History and you can see how a rocket is powered by chemical reactions and how humans return after a journey into space.

Homework takes on a new meaning when you get to go online to research topics. DK and Google are producing books to make homework a journey into discovery. Information springs to life in color pictures, 3-D models and maps.

This book has a website dedicated to the topic of Space Travel. The links in this book are age-appropriate and children can also download images or do additional research.
