Ancient Greek art stands out among that of other ancient cultures for its development of naturalistic but idealized depictions of the human body, in which largely nude male figures were generally the focus of innovation. The rate of stylistic development between about 750 and 300 BC was remarkable by ancient standards, and in surviving works is best seen in sculpture

Tales of Ethiopia as a mythical land at the farthest edges of the earth are recorded in some of the earliest Greek literature of the eighth century . including the epic poems of Homer. Greek gods and heroes, like Menelaos, were believed to have visited this place on the fringes of the known world. However, long before Homer, the seafaring civilization of Bronze Age Crete, known today as Minoan, established trade connections with Egypt. The Minoans may have first come into contact with Africans at Thebes, during the periodic bearing of tribute to the pharaoh.

not enough description. I did not know that there were so few pages and was disappointed.

I am a huge fan of the books in this Art in History series which we use as living art supplements to our homeschool history studies.

The text is easy to read because it is divided into visually appealing chunks. The text includes all the basic vocabulary you need to know to discuss art from the historical period featured. Those vocabulary words are in bold within the text and also listed in a glossary at the end of the book.

Of course an art book must be replete with ART. These books are packed with full color photographs of a well-rounded sampling of art from the period -- architecture, paintings, sculpture, pottery, etc. The famous things that first come to mind are included. For example, the Ancient Greek Art volume devotes a half page to the Parthenon, giving lots of historical details along with the large photograph. In this way, the art book will reinforce what you've read in your history books.

Each volume also includes one or two hands-on craft ideas to experiment with media or techniques relevant to the historical period.
