Melinda lives with her sister, Aunt, and Uncle. Melinda goes out west for her sister's wedding. But what they don't know that a big surprise is waiting for them there. Melinda is very funny. Beatty did a good job of making it feel as if you were there. It was very hard to stop reading the book. I found myself laughing and crying with Melinda.

The two Carpenter sisters—Sarah Jane, 26 and still unmarried, and Melinda Albertine, 13—look very much alike, with yellow hair and gray eyes; but in character they’re not at all alike. Melinda has “inherited the Carpenter horse sense,” while Sarah Jane is a dreadful flirt. Living in Chicago in 1893, they were attending the Columbian Exposition the previous year when Sarah Jane’s flirting finally caught up with her: she got engaged to Edgar Everett Potter III, a visitor from California, “so fast it made [Melinda’s] head swim.” Now Sarah Jane is to head out to Goldendale, Colorado, where Edgar Everett’s parents live, and from there to San Francisco, where he’ll meet her and they’ll get married. But then the girls’ Aunt Rhoda has a dream of her grandmother, who “was scalped by an Indian in 1800”—always a sign of bad luck. She and Uncle Julius can’t leave Chicago, but she decides Melinda should go out to California with Sarah Jane and see her safely married, then return by herself on the train.

In Goldendale a letter from Edgar Everett awaits. Attempting to decipher his dreadful handwriting, Sarah Jane concludes that he proposed to her out of pity, because when he first met her “all I could see was your great loneliness.” Furious, she breaks her engagement and refuses to return to Chicago where everyone she knows would also pity her. Instead, she decides, she’ll go to New York and find work, perhaps “study to be a typewriter girl.” But she doesn’t have enough money even to get back to Chicago, which means she’ll have to find work in Goldendale—no easy task with the price of silver down and the town engaged in a competition to get the county seat—and save her money. It’s then that Melinda first “takes a hand,” suggesting that she respond to a newspaper ad for a housekeeper and cook placed by Judge Garway, whom Melinda met in the hotel dining room. There’s even work for Melinda, who can earn a dime every time she tracks down the Judge’s Great Dane, Edward Gideon, who has a way of wandering all over the town. Since this will allow her to live in the Garway house and serve as a sort of chaperone for her sister, she decides to accept it and stay on.

It may be the 1890’s, but life in Colorado is quite a bit rougher than the Carpenter girls are used to. On the other hand, Melinda adjusts quickly and is soon “taking a hand” in affairs other than her sister’s, including trying to help the Mittelmans, who own the general store, to assemble a minyan so they “can worship publicly, build a temple, or buy a burial ground.” Then she discovers that a pair of British “honourables” are building an actual castle on the ranch they’ve bought outside town—and may even be related to Queen Victoria! If she can marry Sarah Jane off to one of them—or even to Judge Garway—her sister won’t have to go off to New York and take a job. Young readers will enjoy making the acquaintance of clever, resolute, and sensible Melinda and watching how her story turns out.
