Here are thirty-one enchanting selections drawn from Andrew Lang's famous series of colorfully titled fairy tale anthologies. Scholar, poet, novelist, and literary critic, Lang tirelessly collected magical stories from cultures all over the world—stories, according to Lang, that "have been inherited by our earliest civilised ancestors, who really believed that beasts and trees and stones can talk if they choose, and behave kindly or unkindly."The best single-volume collection of Lang's fairy tale classics available, The Rainbow Fairy Book includes "Hansel and Gretel," "Rapunzel," "Jack and the Beanstalk," "The Prince and the Dragon," "Rumpelstiltskin," "The Three Little Pigs," "Snow-White and Rose-Red," and other enduring fables of childhood. Lyrical and timeless, these are the stories that have captured the imaginations of children and adults alike for generations.

This book is a tithe of the 300+ tales contained in Andrew Lang's classic Fairy Books of Many Colors. Lang's versions of the tales are generally considered the best in English; so the temptation of such an anthology, illustrated by Michael Hague, creator of perhaps the finest illustrated children books of recent years, is hard to resist.

Hague's illustrations for this volume, however, turn out to be a big disappointment. First off, the colors are truly garish - there is no other adequate description. Secondly, Hague, who is never at his strongest in describing the human face, hits a real low here. Not one of the illustrations conveys human beauty. Hague who is wonderful in depicting the beauties of landscape and beast, and for the most part succeeds in capturing the ugliness of villains, cannot make Rapunzel, for example, appear anything better than plain. One need look no farther than the backcover illustration for proof of this assertion.

One can also quarrel with the selection of tales. Plenty of the most popular ones are included, too be sure, but the lesser-known tales seem to be selected on the basis of multicultural quotas rather than intrinsic merit.

My advice is to buy the first two or three of the original Lang books instead(in print, from Dover Publications). Their line drawings are far superior to Hague's illustrations, and each one contains more than 30 stories. The first book, the Blue one, has most of the popular tales.

All the volumes were named after colors: "The Red Fairy Book," "The Green Fairy Book," "The Lilac Fairy Book," etc. As the title may reveal, "The Rainbow Fairy Book" is a compilation of tales from all of the different volumes. There are familiar favorites like "Cinderella" and "Puss in Boots" as well as some lesser-known stories like "The Nixy" and "The Water of Life." The table of contents lists the tales and their country of origin, which is interesting, but I would have liked to know which of the "Fairy Books" each was first published in. That's really my only criticism. Other than that it's nearly perfect. This particular edition has very good quality binding, thick, glossy paper and beautiful full-color illustrations. I've had my copy since I was seven. It's seen a lot of love, but it's still in great condition. But I'm not selling it. Sorry.

I think the colors are bold and bright. I love them. I don't think I would buy this book for a child, but as an adult, one for my collection.

If you are an adult that enjoys fairy tales(??), you may be able to comprehend the unfamiliar verbiage used in this book. If, however, you wish to read this book to children, they will not understand the stories, and you'll have to explain everything to them.
