Patricia C. McKissack was born in Smyrna, Tennessee on August 9, 1944. Since the 1980's, she and her husband Frederick L. McKissack have written over 100 books together. She received a bachelor's degree in English from Tennessee State University in 1964 and a master's degree in early childhood literature and media programming from Webster University in 1975. McKissack (August 9, 1944 – April 7, 2017) was an American children's writer. She is best known for writing books about African-American history, many of which have won awards, including the Coretta Scott King Award. McKissack is the author of three books in the Dear America series (A Picture of Freedom, Color Me Dark, Look to the Hills) and one in The Royal Diaries (Nzingha: Warrior Queen of Matamba).
