Nancy Tafuri is one of the most gifted picture book authors for the very young, and she has used her talents . Perfect book for our preschooler's religious education class. Illustrations are colorful and beautiful. The song is heartwarming.

The gentle text and expressive pictures draw young children into the stable along with the animals to see the newborn baby, and to greet him. I read this at storyhours for two and three year olds. The children love joining in on the animals' songs, and when the donkey sings his noisy "hee-haw" song, they laugh along with the baby.

The Donkey's Christmas Song book. When Tafuri first attempted picture book illustration in the late 1970’s picture books were aimed at Nancy Tafuri is probably best known as the creator of Have You Seen My Duckling?, a 1985 Caldecott Honor Book described by Parent’s Choice as beautifully precise yet emotionally affecting. Trained as a graphic designer, Tafuri has authored more than 45 books over 30 years for the very young.

The Donkey's Christmas Song a special baby is born in a stable, and the shy little donkey wants to be the first of the animals to sing his song of welcome. But he is afraid his bray will sound too rough. Lyrically told, and illustrated with large, richly hued images a glow with starlight, this joyous picture book is the perfect way to welcome young children into the wonder of the first Christmas.

Stable animals that witness Jesus' birth welcome him with joyful noise in this fittingly melodic picture book. All the creatures wish to offer their unique songs to the baby, but the shy donkey refrains from taking part, worried that his bray is too coarse. In the end, his sincere "hee-haw" receives a most wonderful response.

Recorded by Lou Monte, Dominick The Donkey is a novelty song even by Christmas music standards. Oh yeah, and while the donkey’s doing all this, he’s wearing the mayor’s derby hat, because you’ve got to look sharp. The opening line finds Monte-or someone else, or heck, maybe a real donkey-singing hee-haw, hee-haw as sleigh bells jingle in the background. A mere 12 seconds into the tune, it’s clear you’re in for a wild ride.

A donkey and other favorite animals welcome a very special baby in this warm, broadly appealing celebration of the first Christmas.A very special baby is born in a stable under a star, surrounded by friendly farmyard animals. The donkey wants to be the first to welcome the baby, but he is too shy. So the doves welcome him with their "Coo-coo," the cow with her "Moo-moo," and all the other animals in turn. Then, the baby welcomes the shy donkey with his own sweet smile. The donkey brays - "Hee-aw!" - and the baby laughs with joy! Then all snuggle around the baby and settle into sleep. This warm presentation of the first Christmas celebrates the wonder of a baby's birth and welcomes all into the spirit of holiday joy.

All the stable animals want to welcome the baby Jesus, and each take turns "singing" their own song by their respective animal noises. The doves' song is slow and sweet, the cow's is low and warm . . . such is the procession of gentle welcomes. When it is donkey's turn, he is concerned that his bray will be too loud. Nonetheless, he offers the baby his "noisy song", which elicits great joy and laughter from Jesus.

This book is an excellent choice for young children. Though it does not mention Jesus by name, nor many other Biblical details, it remains true to its intended age group. The simple and sweet text hold a child's attention while building just enough suspense for the ending. Meanwhile, it teaches/confirms each animal's name and its sound. There is also a lesson for young and old alike: that each of us are given a talent that can bring joy to our Lord, even when we think our gift is not as impressive as other's. In the end, your child will join along with Jesus in laughter at the donkey's noisy "hee-aw!"

No offense to the reviewer disappointed that this is not a "historical teaching tool", but this book is not intended to be that! Nancy Tafuri is one of the most gifted picture book authors for the very young, and she has used her talents here to make the Nativity story accessible to the very youngest readers.
No, they don't get the deeper message, but we are talking about very little children and their first introduction to the story--and this works!
There are plenty of good books out there for older children about the Nativity. But if you want something to gently introduce your child to the wonder of Christmas--here it is.

I fell in love with this book; and so bought it for my 2 year old granddaughter; and then for my class of 3-4 year olds at Church.
All the kids were engaged. The pictures are adorable, Each animal in the barn comes to greet the baby Jesus; donkey, shy, last but best.
I embellish it as I read it to the kids; emphasizing how happy each animal is to see Jesus; and how so very kind Jesus is he welcomes the donkey. that way it serves two purposes; bringing the kids to Christ; and entertaining them with adorable pictures of barn animals.
