The book begins with an examination of geography and predecessors to give the proper background and moves on to consider the sources of information on the subject and their validity. D'Altroy himself describes his ambition in this book as a straightforward presentation of the Inca Empire and society. He notes in his Introduction that 'the Incas have proved to be remarkably malleable in the hands of historians and archaeologists' but this book provides a rock-solid foundation and admirably achieves the author's objective.

This book explores the ancient Inca through their social structure. It details the duties of an emperor, the activities of a priest, and much more. It also describes some of the discoveries and writings that have led to our present-day understanding of this fascinating culture.

I bought this book some time back and its been a really great addition to my library! Its written in modern simple language, loads of pictures and diagrams. Its a really indepth look at the history, culture and daily life of the Inca.

I would not recommend this book to anyone who wished to have accurate information about the Incas, for teacher or student. The pictures are poorly and often inaccurately captioned, if at all. Inca words are misspelled. Wrong names are used, as in Pedro de Cieza de Leon being referred to as 'Leon' - that's where he was from, not his surname. The caption of a photo of Machu Picchu refers to Inca roads, but fails to point out that the noticeable road that switchbacks its way from the river valley up to the site is a modern road, and not one that follows an Inca way. A picture of an Inca cup claims it depicts a warrior disciplining a child, when in fact it's a warrior about to bash a foe with a fearsome Inca club. Several really laughable European illustrations of imaginary Inca scenes, dating from the sixteenth century to Victorian times, are included, showing Incas wearing flimsy togas or celebrating religious rites with Greek-style vessels. The author does not identify these for the reader as being perhaps less trustworthy than the illustrations of Guaman Poma de Ayala, an Inca descendant who actually knew what he was drawing. The bio of the author on the last page says she hopes to walk the Inca road someday; this would probably have been a better book if she'd done that first.

The best thing that can be said for this book is that it is long and filled with interesting facts about the Inca Empire. Unfortunately, the book reads like the author has done a lot of research and has to prove it. This book reminds me of a tedious college term paper. Unfortunatley, Patricia Calvert is not a very good writer and she lacks a deeper understanding of Inca history. The illustrations used in the book are of poor quality and most are historically innacurate. If you want better books about the Incas, check out Fiona MacDonald's "Inca Town" and Tim Woods' "The Incas".

Fabulous, intriguing and colorful resource for understanding the culture and daily life of the Ancient Incas.
