When we last left Dicey, James, Maybeth and Sammy - they were beginning new lives, living on their grandmothers farm. This novel has more focus on the characters themselves, rather than much plot. Which was quite a change from the adventure driven storyline in book 1. It was nonetheless enjoyable, and I loved following the kids as they learned to adjust to life "I have the feeling that I know who I am, only I'm not anymore.

Picking up where Homecoming left off, Dicey Tillerman and her three siblings, Sammy, Maybeth, and James, are now living with their crazy and widowed grandmother Abigail Tillerman, or Gram as the children call her, on her farm just outside Crisfield, Maryland.

Set directly after the events of Homecoming, Dicey’s Song details the life of the Tillerman children and Gram as they settle into together. Each of the children and Gram have their own issues they must deal with from the events before and during Homecoming. Dicey has issues with letting go of the responsibility of raising her siblings.

You two are a mess, Gram announced, before she even went up the back steps. She looked at Dicey and hesitated, as if deciding whether or not to say what she was thinking. You’re too old to go around half-naked, she announced.

That wasn’t the way things went for the Tillermans, ever. She wasn’t about to let that get her down. She couldn’t let it get her down - that was what had happened to Momma. You two are a mess, Gram announced, before she even went up the back steps.

Although I liked the first book in the series more, this is still a worthwhile read. The characters are well developed and the emotional transitions feel believable. My main complaint is that it was rather slow moving, and I almost gave up in the first half. The plot does build eventually to a very poignant and satisfying conclusion.

I'm a grandmother of 5 and a former teacher, and this is one of my favorite books. Dicey is an admirable character. It is so annoying to keep running into the same precocious, smart-mouthed, self-involved characters in children's books and on TV. In contrast, Dicey is responsible, determined and a great role model for kids.

I suggest you start your reader with Homecoming, because this is the sequel. Homecoming can get a little slow, so you might want to read aloud some of it or just read it too to keep them interested, because it's a bit long and slow in parts. But most kids (even some boys) fly through Dicey's song. My oldest granddaughter is really enjoying it and almost finished. I gave it to her for Christmas. She's ten and it's hard to keep her in books.

Most kids would read this at around 12. You can get a lot of information about the watermen of the Eastern Shore to help bring it alive. Google skipjacks and Tilghman's Island for local color. For Homecoming, you could have your child trace on a map their progress. Terrific book, and there are more in the series.

This book series should be required reading for all jr high schools. She is an excellent author and I feel like every character came alive as I read the book.

I liked the characters and the way the author tied success to the display of positive personal qualities.

This story is so well written and has such depth to it. It is worth reading by all ages - I'm in my 50's and have enjoyed it above most of the books written for women my age. The relationships are so real, as are the struggles for someone in Dicey's position. Despite the struggles, this is a feel good book - highly recommended, as is the first book in the series.

I read and enjoyed these books as a teen, and now my own kids are (almost) old enough to read them, I have sought them out on the Kindle. Think I might wait one more year to ask my daughter to try this as it deals with bereavement issues, but it is a great book.

I picked up "Homecoming" years ago and was entranced; worked my way through the series and have just picked it up again. Thoroughly enjoying the re-reads. Her language is beautiful, the characters are real, and it makes me miss the water...
My favorite in the Tillerman family cycle.... Dicey is complex and interesting, and it is a pleasure to watch her grow and find herself.
