Candy Dawson Boyd (born August 8, 1946) is an American writer, activist, and educator. She is an author of more than six children's books focused on African-American youth. Candy Dawson Boyd was born in 1946 in Chicago, Illinois. Her birth name is Marguerite Cecille Dawson. Her parents were Mary Ruth Ridley and Julian Dawson. Boyd had two siblings and she was the oldest of the three. Her mother and father divorced. Boyd was raised by her mother. They lived in South Chicago.

This Coretta Scott King Honor Award book is a story about a young girl and her family's struggles after her father dies. The young heroine, Mattie, seeks to make her mother happy again by purchasing a special Mother's Day gift. Mattie soon learns a very valuable lesson when she enters a writing contest she hopes to win. It is this strong, but honorable young girl that we come to know through her thoughts and actions.

Mattie is brought to life by her relationship with other characters in the story. You know she is hard working by how her and her twin brother split the household chores and by the respect the family she babysits has for her. Besides her family concerns, there is another story going on at school between her and two other students who accuse her of stealing from one of them. Readers will know that this is not Mattie's personality and that her honesty will come out in the end.

It is these two stories going on at the same time, the home situation and the school problem, that will engage readers in this book. In addition, this contemporary realistic fiction could be any young girls story and Mattie is a good model. Boyd (1984) realistically portrays a family in trouble but one that can find their way back through each other's love and support.

I wanted to read this book because Maddie, the main character, had the same situation as I did (about our fathers). I didn't really like this book because it was too long. The book was about a girl that wanted to buy her mom a gold pin, but she didn't have a lot of money. Her mom would say things like this "Take off that red shirt your dad gave you," and the little girl wore it all the time because her dad died and she liked it so much. In a way I liked it only at the beginning because it made me want to read it more. I really don't know what the meaning of the book was because it had enormous words! It could have been a real story because it felt really real to me. It is a sad story but it can have cheerful times too, and that's what made me read more of that book. I give this book 3 stars because it made me feel like I was actually in the story, and it had a lot of wonderful details, but it was little boring.

I realy loved this book. I read this book back in 1990, and I fell in love with it. At first I said I was going to just read the first chapter. The book got so good, that I read the whole thing. After that, all I've been wanting to do is just let her know how great it was. For people like myself, I hate to read, but for some reason this book caught my attention. I just want to say "GREAT JOB"!!!

I am giving this book to my fifth grade son to read and I hope he likes it as much as I did. The story is genuine, realistic (the author admits that it is basically a true story from her life), heartfelt, moving . . . well worth reading for a tween aged young person. The writing is not literary -- and pales in comparison to the writing of a youth novel master such as Christopher Paul Curtis -- but the story makes up for that.

Highly recommended for ages 8 to 12.

This book sharpened my mind and helped me feel better about my family's troubles with money. I have never liked reading,but when I picked up this book and read the first chapter I could not put it down.This was a very inspirational book and for that I thank Candy Dawson Boyd.
