Also by jerry spinelli. To Eileen, my Stargirl. It fell to her shoulders. Something was strapped across her back, but it wasn’t a book bag. At first I thought it was a miniature guitar.

Also by jerry spinelli. And to Loren Eiseley, who taught us that even as we are, we are becoming. I found out later it was a ukulele.

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli is a young adult classic (maybe even a children's classic but that's really a cataloguing issue that I am ill-equipped to discuss). This designation raises the question: What makes a book (any book) a classic? For me it means a book that is timeless; something you can read years and years after it was written without the book losing its vibrancy. After finishing this book and recently reading Love, Stargirl (Spinelli's newly released sequel), I have my own explanation: Stargirl is magical. She represents the kind of magic more people need in their lives: to appreciate the little things, to dare to be different, to be kind to strangers.

In this celebration of nonconformity, Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli weaves a tense, emotional tale about the perils of popularity and the thrill and inspiration of first love. Don’t miss the sequel, Love, Stargirl, and Jerry Spinelli’s latest novel, The Warden’s Daughter, about another girl who can't help but stand out. Spinelli is a poet of the prepubescent.

Except for Stargirl jabbering in my ear, the usual raucous chatter was absent. Mostly what I noticed were the eyes. Faces turned up from the steps below, but the eyes never connected with us. Mostly what I noticed were the eyes nt right on through us as if they were gamma rays. Or they nipped our ears and rattled off among the walls and other eyes. I had an urge to look down at myself, to make sure I was there. At lunch I said to Kevin, "Nobody looks at m. He was staring at his sandwich. Now you're doing i.

Ages 12+. Leo Borlock follows the unspoken rule at Mica Area High School: don't stand out-under any circumstances! Then Stargirl arrives at Mica High and everything changes-for Leo and for the entire school. After 15 years of home schooling, Stargirl bursts into tenth grade in an explosion of color and a clatter of ukulele music, enchanting the Mica student body. But the delicate scales of popularity suddenly shift, and Stargirl is shunned for everything that makes her different.

JERRY SPINELLI is the author of many novels for young readers, including The Warden's Daughter; Stargirl; Love, Stargirl; Milkweed; Crash; Wringer; and Maniac Magee, winner of the Newbery Medal; along with Knots in My Yo-Yo String, the autobiography of his childhood. A graduate of Gettysburg College, he lives in Pennsylvania with his wife, poet and author Eileen Spinelli.

In this story about the perils of popularity, the courage of nonconformity, and the thrill of first love, an eccentric student named Stargirl changes Mica High School forever.

Homeschooled for most of her life, Stargirl shows up in public high school and really shakes things up. She’s a free spirit who cares deeply about everyone else. But there is something very wrong with her according to other students. She doesn’t conform. And not conforming in public school is bad.

Told from the point of view of her boyfriend, Leo, Stargirl is a quick, but emotional read. All teens should read it because pushing others to conform is common in school, but not a good idea. You never know what you might miss that would make your life better when those pushed become (or pretend to be) what you want them to be.

I enjoyed this book. I thought it was fun to read and I was interested to see what would happen to Stargirl. I was reading to my sheltered 4th and 5th graders, so some of the relationship stuff [kissing] was too much for a few of them. They were not as interested in the book, but that is my fault for trying it on a younger/immature group.

Summer reading project for my grandson. We have layered reading so I get to enjoy the books as well. Star girl is one I would recommend. Great value teaching in there. Be sure to discuss life experiences with your child while reading. We did.

If you like humor, love, and peer pressure first hand, this is the story for you. I goes through the emotions of wanting to be diffrent but not ,because of being scared of what others think.. I absolutely can't tell you how much this is true.. Every school has that one person who no one thinks much about, but you'd be surprised at what they can do. this is Stargirl.. I can't wait to read the second..

This book contains great messages about individuality, standing up against the conforming waves of high school, and just being yourself. It's well done and a refreshing break from yet another dystopian world with an angst-ridden hero/heroine.

Spinelli, J. (2000). Stargirl. New York: Dell Laurel-Leaf

Synopsis: At Mica High School everyone eats the same, dresses the same, talks the same, acts the same and no one is different. That is until the day that Stargirl shows up. Stargirl is an eccentric, kind home schooled student who does not conform to the same set of values or ideals as the typical students at Mica High School. She has no understanding of what is popular, nor does she realize the invisible social and cultural boundaries that are present around her. Stargirl plays birthday songs for her new classmates, leaves surprises for unsuspecting peers, and even displays random acts of kindness that go unknown. For some time the students are fearful and embarrassed of this stranger. However soon, the individuality of Stargirl spreads to other students. Leo falls head over heels in love with this flower in the desert. He loves everything about especially her individualism. After a fretful incident at basketball game, Stargirl's popularity begins to plummet. She is outcast and shunned by her classmates. In a desperate attempt to save his face and Stargirl's reputation, Leo asks Stargirl to do the unthinkable, to become normal. After a period of normalcy, Stargirl realizes the sacrifice she is making. Leo and his classmates are shocked how Stargirl's presence has changed their lives.

Evaluation: Spinelli's expertly written book brings light to the sensitive issues of nonconformity and popularity within the young adult setting of high school. His text encourages readers to honor differences and individualism. It is an excellent read aloud at the late elementary and middle grades. In addition, Stargirl is a must read for highschool students. One of the golden rules is to love thy neighbor. In Spinelli's book, the invisible social and cultural boundaries become apparent to readers. Displaying unacknowledged random acts of kindness are clearly an unwritten undertone of this book. Readers will likely have a desire to try something extraordinary to see how if affects the lives of those around them. Educators will likely use this text with middle and high school level readers to discuss the meaning of "normal" and popularity within school settings and how the social and cultural boundaries affect the social/emotional well-being of their peers. The author's language is light and airy while bringing such heart-felt topics to the surface in a sensitive manner. Middle and high school level readers are likely to find strong connections from their own lives to this book.

This story is about a girl who lives outside the lines; who dances in the rain without an umbrella; who has a rat for a friend; who erases herself so she can blend into a moment in time. This is a story that is told in the first person narrative by a boy who is not the first person. This is about what happens in High School when someone weird walks the halls.

After having been immersed within the pages of some serious readings, this book was a breath of fresh air. Stargirl swept me off my feet into a world I knew was always in me. I lost track of that world as I grew into adulthood where ‘life’ somehow made me forget what was real. Stargirl brought it all back.

A very nice YA telling. Very nice indeed.
This is one of my favorite books of all times. Perhaps even exclusively my favorite. It's a book everyone should read, in my opinion, from 2nd grade girls to college aged and adults. Inspiring, motivational, uplifting, thought-provoking. The only problem with this book is I have trouble keeping it. In the spirit of Stargirl, every copy I get for my personal library, I seem to quickly find someone I think would love and benefit from this book and give it away. My latest strategy is to buy in bulk every time I find Stargirl for a good price. Hopefully this way I can hang on to a copy for myself at least a little longer. Spenelli is always brilliant, but this book seems to shine a little brighter. A love story to fruit bats, sunflowers, and all the little things in life we over look too often. Buy 5, one for you, one for your next door neighbor, one for your friend, one for a stranger on the street, and one for your favorite teacher so we can all be a little more in touch with our inner Stargirls.
