The Middle East by Philip Steele is a highly informative, non-fiction book. It discusses cultural, political, geographical and religious aspects of the Middle East. The book is divided into two chapters that focus on “People and Places” and “Modern Countries.” Chapter 1 focuses on diet, climate, history, and quality of life in the Middle East. Did you know that the Saudi Arabia’s Rub’ al-Khali desert reaches temperatures of 140 degrees Fahrenheit in the day and plummets to the freezing point at night? Although the format seems inconsistent between topics, this is definitely a great read for all school ages kid and adults. It is full of intriguing facts and abundant illustrations. Here’s another cool fact: Istanbul’s covered market (Kapali Carsi) was established in 1491 A.D. and is still operational today. That’s 523 years! Read this book and you will feel inspired to know more. In addition to the information found in the book, The Middle East provides several links to websites and museums with further information on each topic. In my opinion, if you simply want an overview of the Middle East this book satisfies that requirement. However, if you want more in-depth details, I recommend utilizing the links provided by the author in each session. The websites are highly in depth and a positive addition to this book. Learning about the Middle East may seem like a daunting task, however with The Middle East book in-hand …everything you need is at your fingertips. I enjoyed learning more about the Middle East. The Middle East provides you the opportunity you need to expand your cultural horizons.

I have read this book so many times in the past two years, and it is a great book about the Middle East( stretching from Egypt to Iran and from Turkey to Oman and Yemen)and the book tells different interesting facts about each country for example ( In Syria, nine out of ten people are of Arab Descent and speak Arabic, while their are also Armenian and Kurdish Communities in Syria) and about how in the Gulf States, the traditional people are now being outnumbered by immigrants from other parts of Asia in places like Qatar and The United Arab Emirates.
