Cracker’s Mule may be enjoyed by good readers of the protagonist’s age. But as Harry Potter has shown, a well-written work can attract an adult audience. will appeal to those who appreciate reading about a time rich in Southern tradition. Inspired by his own childhood, Billy Moore spins a folksy down-home yarn about a boy's eleventh summer at his grandparents' farm and the cantankerous and loveable characters who challenge and support his emerging maturity. Following a livestock auction, the boy, Cracker, takes home a stone-blind mule, opening this tale of misadventure which includes a bull-headed dog, a duo of ornery mules plus the sightless, Mr. Sam.

Billy Moore was born in Liverpool, England. He has worked as a teacher, a Muay Thai fighter, and an extra on film sets. Following his release from prison in Thailand, he returned to Britain, where he now lives with his family. Once I cracked the spine open, I turned the pages with ease. The story takes a candid look at the consequences of relapse from addiction without blaming parents, neighborhoods or "the system". Moore paints a clear portrait of the internal struggles of sobriety long after the last drink or sniff and the uncontrollable hell that relapse wrecks on a person's life.

Billy Moore Birthplace: Liverpool, England, UK. Questioning the Story: What led to Billy Moore's decline into a life . Questioning the Story: What led to Billy Moore's decline into a life of crime and drugs? Moore suffered an abusive childhood at the hands of his alcoholic father, as described in his book A Prayer Before Dawn, on which the movie is based. I was brought up being told I was worthless and thinking there was no value in life," says Moore. He grew up in poverty in Liverpool's council estates (public housing) in Walton, where he began his slow slide into a life of crime and drug addiction (cocaine and heroin).

Tales from a Counry Man. Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 14 years ago. Reading Cracker's Mule was like listening to my father. It took me to a time when I would sit in Daddy's lap and hear him tell the tales of his childhood. Billy Moore takes the country between Alabama and Florida he and my father both live in and gave it the only voice it could have-an honest one.

Eleven-year-old Billy desperately wanted to learn the art of buying and selling livestock from the traders he saw around him at the livestock auction. So he was mortified when he discovered that the mule he had recommended that his grandfather buy was blind. Billy, nick-named Cracker by the locals in the rural Alabama town where he was spending the summer, grew to love that mule as they settled into the work routines on his grandparents' farm. Although opportunities for fun and adventure came along in unpredictable ways, Billy also learned to start facing adulthood as he helped his grandparents cope financially with their rising medical costs in the face of declining revenues from crop sales.

Cleverly woven throughout this appealing story are some important economic lessons, including the workings of the market for livestock as well as the challenges of managing a farm when drought threatens both the crops and the animals. Cracker's Mule gets high marks all around for its substantive content, lively characters, interesting plot, and good old-fashioned fun.

This engaging story takes place during the polio epidemic of the 1950's, when an eleven year old boy was sent to spend the summer with his grandparents on their farm in Alabama. Cracker, so nicknamed by the locals, has many adventures, vividly and interestingly desribed as he matures from a boy to a young man. Billy Moore's narrative also imparts a colorful description of rural life. His use of "country" expressions adds much to the charm and authenticity of the book. This book is fast-paced and funny. It is a delightful read for both young and old.
I look forward to reading more from Billy Moore!

My husband and I both enjoyed reading Cracker's Mule. This book reminded my husband of the many hours he spent at the livestock auctions with his uncle. This is a book that can be enjoyed by all ages. Cracker's Mule is a book that kids can read and see how kids back in the fifties enjoyed life without tv, cd's, and video games. This book will have you in stitches. I highly recommend this book to everyone. Hope there will be a Cracker's Mule Two soon. Great job Billy Moore!

Reading Cracker's Mule was like listening to my father. It took me to a time when I would sit in Daddy's lap and hear him tell the tales of his childhood. Billy Moore takes the country between Alabama and Florida he and my father both live in and gave it the only voice it could have--an honest one. I am privileged to have had the chance to work alongside Billy Moore, and even happier that he wrote this story. I cannot wait to read Little Brother, Real Snake.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading Crackers Mule. It reminded me of my summers as a kid growing up in the south during the fifties. This book should be enjoyed by all ages but especially by the youth who will learn how many children of the fifties spent their summers and the grandparents who will enjoy remembering the way it was. Great job Billy Moore! Keep up the good work. Thanks for the memories.
Cracker's Mule is an enjoyable read for all ages. It illicits a wide range of emotional responses from tears to rib-splitting laughter. Cracker's Mule provides a look at the time when life was simpler, when relationships were built with time and care, when life was more closely tied to the land, and when kids did not get "bored" with summer.
