William Shakespeare's great tragedy of "Hamlet" gets the graphic novel treatment courtesy of Classics Illustrated and a first rate job by adapters Steven Grant and Tom Mandrake.

"Hamlet" has been produced for the stage and screen many times over the years; the basic plot and many of the best lines are well-known. Translating the entire play into graphic novel format for a younger audience is just a bit more challenging. This version does a excellent job of marrying dialogue to artwork, and the essentials are all there. This reviewer wishes a few explanatory notes had been included in the text.

As the story opens, Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, is grieving over the death of his father and unhappy over his mother's too-hasty remarriage to his uncle. The grief and unhappiness turn to rage, however, when his father's ghost reveals to Hamlet that his death was a murder. Hamlet, face with a conflict between his duty to avenge his father and his obligation to obey the King, must resort to deception and intrigue in making difficult choices, which will have fatal consequences for the Royal household...

The Classic Illustrated edition of "Hamlet" is highly recommended as an introduction for young readers to one of the best known works of William Shakespeare.

One of the most popular of Shakespeare's plays is Hamlet. Reading many of the famous Bard's plays can often be a challenging task. However, the idea of putting some of the great literary classics in a fully illustrated graphic novel format is a unique and immaginative idea. This format may have been written with children in mind as a way to introduce the classics to chidren, but in fact, these graphic full color illustrated texts will also be a joy to read by adults who may also be interested in Shakespeare and other legendary writers.

The story of Hamlet is about a "vengeance-seeking prince of Denmark." This is a story about revenge, murder, duty, ethics and morality. It is a spooky tale that will keep you turning the pages. The brief introduction explains some interesting facts about this particular play and will help you to understand the background in which this play was introduced by Shakespeare. It important to note that this adapttation is based upon the Hamlet text that was published in 1604 and 1623.

In conclusion, this Hamlet graphic novel does not take the place of reading the full version, which everyone who is interested in the works of William Shakespeare should read; however, it does provide interesting illustrations to make the story come alive.

Hamlet is my favourite Shakespeare, and probably why I now love good books where everybody dies at the end. I enjoyed Mandrake's art here very much. It's very rich and full, filling the entire page and suits the atmosphere; the lines have an ethereal curvature to them lending to the ghostly theme. When I started to read I was surprised to find that this adaption consists of actual Shakespearean text; I don't know why. I shouldn't have been, since Papercutz has proven itself to be very committed to preserving the content of the original books they are presenting in this series. I'm an odd duck, though, and think Shakespeare is best read by the masses, unless you are a scholar or poetry freak, in ordinary English. I enjoy the plays in the original vernacular because, well, plays are meant to be heard/watched not read. That's just how I am. Back to the book. If you want an original text adaptation this is very good, all the famous quotes are here and the story hasn't been watered down. All the racy bits are here too. But most children won't understand most of the language as there are no footnotes to explain the abundance of 16th century vocabulary. However, they'll get the gist of what is going on by putting the phrases together with the pictures and multiple reads will further expand the enjoyment.
