An average book for Excel tips. My major frustration with this book was the writing. The authors go into excrutiating step-by-step detail of how to implement various Excel solutions. Additionally, the authors fail to adequately "set-up" the task at hand. In other words, the time spent on telling one how to do something is much too long as compared to telling them "why" to do something. I find the books which achieve this to be the most valuable. If you want to add another reference book to your Excel collection, this book has its place. However, I would purchase "Excel Hacks" first.

I own over 40 books on Excel. As far as purely practical, useful Excel HOW TO information goes, in a "gun-to-my-head" situation, this is without a doubt the ONE book I'd keep. Like the reviewer who started highlighting and gave up, I began putting tabs on pages with the "good stuff" and ended up with a book that looks like I am marketing tabs! Compared to the Excel "Bible" type books, this is like a Formula 1 car vs. a Yugo-it gets you where you need to be a LOT faster. From the perspective of an Excel user in a business climate, but not a specialization like accounting, this book has just about eveything you need to go from a person who knows the basics to being the person that most people in your office come to as the department (or company) "guru." I probably sound like Jelen is my uncle or I'm on his payroll, but I am neither. It's just a great tool deserving of its accolades.

This is one of those books that every so often makes you mumble "Aaaah, that's how to do that." Not intended for the beginner, this is a book that presumes you know Excel, perhaps you even work with it every day.

I glanced at the book, then looked in the index for Pivot Table. There was a whole chapter. And this is an area most Excel books either ignore or gloss over lightly. And if you really want a thrill, go look at the Microsoft documentation on them. In about 40 pages, this chapter answered everything I needed to know to get over the emergency of the moment. I guess I gave out with the appropriate Aaaah's. I was really left with just one question. Why do they call them Pivot Tables, what a meaningless name.

After this, I sat down to read the book. I found that I skimmed over a lot. Some of it I knew, some of it I didn't care about, some of it I filed away to remember when I needed to do something different. If you're serious about doing Excel, this is a book you need to have.

I agree with the other reviewers who have said this book is poorly written. However, I have learned a lot of extremely useful tips. Copying you page setup settings to other sheets is one of my favorites. I also like the fact that this book contains no filler; it's jam-packed with smart tips on using Excel.
I would say that if you are already a pretty advanced Excel user, it's not too difficult to decipher the many poorly written explanations. If I were rating the book on its writing quality alone, I'd give it two or three stars. As for usefulness to an already advanced or intermediate user, I give it five. Just be prepared to struggle at times understanding what the authors are saying. I hope they put more care into writing their subsequent books.

This is the most unbelievable software book I've ever read! I started highlighting helpful ideas, but almost immediately gave up that effort because I'd have to highlight every line! No matter what your level of Excel expertise, this book will boggle your mind. I have a library full of Excel books, but NEVER have I seen even a fraction of these tips and tricks. How Bill and Joseph discovered these shortcuts, I'll never know. But thank goodness they had the foresight and generosity to share them with the rest of us!!! This is a MUST READ BOOK.

Although many other authors and publishers claim that there isn't another Excel book like their's, in this case it is true. The book reads the way a true Help manual should, quick and to the point.
There are so many tips and tricks listed in this book that every chapter can teach even the oldest of dogs new tricks. There is a nice blend of tips that speed up spreadsheet navigation, auditing and use with easy to follow examples that introduce some of the most useful features of Excel. If you have ever cringed whilst watched people using Excel inefficiently, just wait until you've mastered some of the techniques explained in this book.
The book has examples using VBA but the intent of the book is not to teach VBA extensively. In keeping with the theme of the book, most of the VBA examples that are included are useful and can be directly imported into you workbooks without modification. i.e. useful real-world examples.
"Mr. Excel on Excel" is purely and simply a very well-written reference manual for those of us that need the answers quickly.

Let me get right to the point - This is a great book! If you're serious about mastering excel get this book.
I knew it was going to be useful when straight off there was a chapter on using the keyboard rather than the mouse! Something I found more than advantageous and time saving years ago - I'm glad this view is shared and passed along. This alone will save you hours of work time.
If you crunch numbers for a living, you'll be happy to know this is the book you've been looking for! Its down to business approach is an accountant's dream!
