I have been writing software since 1969 in all forms, but mostly engineering applications rather than Windows or web code. Above all else, book about software development should have loads of exmaples, and when describing the use of a specific compiler, leave very little to the imagination (compilers are too loaded with power that only their developers and heavy duty users understand. Horton's book does exactly this!

Even though I've had the VC++6 compiler since 1998, I'd not used it for anything more than fast prototype code or code that had specific value only to me. Well, with the exception of writing a 'fast fingers' piee to train myself to be really really fast at the "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" game (a GREAT little app.)

my last Windows work had been in 1996/7 and was related to testing cable systems (worse, it was only modifying existing Borland C++ developed under SDK! so I learned little and rememebered less) and some VC++5 code that I worked out in 1997 for a few months.

Now I'd bought Ivor Horton's book on VC++5 in about 1997 and had read it occasionally, in very rare moments, so I knew it had quality to it, had the features I value most in a software book: examples and comprehensive detail made explicit.

When I recently discovered a new idea for software, I realized that I had to learn VC++6 for true Windows - and I have plenty of reference books on this topic dating from 1992 - it took about two weeks of floundering around with a dozen of them to finally realize that Horton's book on VC++5 was the best of the lot... so I bought his book on VC++6.

If you are a beginner, Horton will NOT fail you. The book is immense, over a thousand pages, but it is also easy to understand no matter how rusted you are - and I was well rusted by lack of recent C++ experience.

I've been sitting in Borders and read though about 10 books on VC++, and finally I picked this one. I know C++ fairly well, but I've not really touched Visual C++. I have also used Visual Basic, and pretty much figured out VB by myself. But I was confused when I start use Visual C++.
As many people have said that first half of the book is about the standard C++. And the rest is about MFC. Some reviewers said they know C++ pretty well (it seems the first half is not useful for them), but got confused by the second part on MFC. The trueth is you need understand standard C++ to really understand how to use Visual C++. Even after using C++ for 3 years now, There are still things can confuse me (i'm not talking about wrting loops here). Some people said they will learn OOP then C then C++, hmmm, they clearly don't know what they are talking about. Truelly understanding the standard C++ will give you the fundation of studying more advnaced features of the language. If you don't know how pointer works, how class and inheritance works, read and UNDERSTAND the first half of the book first before complain anything for not understanding the rest.
Many other books I read teach you quickly on how to make windows and applications in Visual C++. A none C++ programmer should be able to follow them, but they are not going to really understand what's going on. With this book you will know how and why things work the way they are by clearly understand the fundmental of C++.

Although this is quite a large book, I bought it with every intention of going from cover to cover. But for the C++ beginner I think it's easy to get lost in some of the examples. I think in a book like this the examples should be as plain and simple as possible and still illustrate the concept being discussed. Granted, to someone experienced in C++, the examples ARE very simple, but can still be confusing to a total beginner. When you start trying to do something useful in the examples, like calculate prime numbers or the amount of wallpaper a room needs, you add in an extra element that could confuse someone. For me the book is a nice reference to have around to look something up, but not something that, for me anyway, could bring me from a total beginner to writing useful programs on its own.

I read this book with years of amateur programming experience, but nothing in C. Horton gives you a course on programming C, then C++, then on using C++ with the most common Microsoft technologies, such as MFC, COM, ATL, and the SDK. For all that information, it's really a marvel he can teach that much in one book. Of course, no programming book is THE authority and further reading is necessary if, for example, you want to try to pass an MCP exam. It took me 2 other, additional books to do that. Some of the examples in the book are confusing, though he does a pretty good job of making sure he explains all the lines of code in his examples. As I said, it helps to have another reference handy in case you don't understand a concept he has explained.

I do like this book because it is so technical. It goes into great detail about Visual C++ 6 and starts at the beginning assuming you know very little about the language. I did go out and buy Microsoft Visual C++ 6 (go to Ebay and save a lot of money) so I would be able to learn as I do, so that is something you may want to think about before buying this book. This book is large, so it's not for those who want to learn in a few nights. If you're looking for a good book on Visual C++ 6 then I'd highly suggest this one.

I read this book a long time ago, but I remember how good it was. I have to say that there are few authors out there that really know how to keep it interesting, fun, and to the point. This book was a great read! The examples were very clear. There is absolutely no rambling and useless theory. The exercises at the end of the chapters were also a good thing and force you to learn.

I have sampled a few other books on C++ in the past but this book was the best C++ programming book I have found.

If you just want someone to tell you how to program in C++, get this book. If, on the other hand, you want useless theory and/or a long story to explain a simple concept, get a different book.
