This book is not for the beginner programmer.

This book is not for the beginner programmer. It is recommended that you have a few years of web development and database development experience before attempting to work through Struts Fast Track. It is assumed that the reader knows the fundamentals of SQL, Java, Object Orientation, HTML, Servlets, JSP's, and XML. In other words, this is not a book to learn the basics of Java and web development.

This book is not a reference on all the features of Struts it is a practical guide for how to use Struts effectively in your web application. The book has many valuable labs including labs on validation, tiles, stress testing and master detail. I found the book to very usefull. A book for programmers, not managers. When I got this book, I had no J2EE development environment on my laptop. This book describes all the tools you should download. The tools recommended are worthwhile, but not presented in a way you can easily use. You have to do some work. However, given that I could not find alternative sources of information in print, it did give me a good understanding of what Struts can do.
Since writing this review, another book came on the market called Mastering Jakarta Struts by James Goodwill. I gave that book a 5 star review. That one is a VERY worthwhile Struts resource.

I dont know how to to start when explaining how bad this book really is.
A book that is a beta, i didnt even know a book could be a BETA edition, software okay, but a beta book? DOH.
I am quite familiar with struts and know its inner workings, however I see this title and think that the author knows more than me. "Struts Fast Track" What a ... joke, this book is a joke, it cost me [money] which was converted directly into the pound equivelent [money].
This book does nothing to explain the innner workings of struts, in fact it is the most patronising and condescending book I have ever read.
Let me put it this way, you know Java, and have years of experience in internet application programming, you work with struts and see a book that may give you yet more knowledge, OHH NO, this book is the opposite, it tells you that you know nothing and is patronising to boot, it is broken up into a number of workshops that you must complete otherwise the author will paint you to be a simpleton.
Okay so this book is a school task book, inwhich you have to complete minor tasks, but that isnt the most anoying think about this book, oh know. The author is wrong on a number of accounts. The person that wrote this book sees XSL and CSS as opposite apposing forces, inwhich xsl and css are fighting to be the presentation layer for the internet. Im not even going to go there but please open your eyes. XSL and CSS are so different.
Im sorry but words cant even sum up howe stupid this book really is, not only is its contents rediculous but its seems to have been produced by a word document gone wrong. I have never seen such material that could lead the unsuspected reader up the garden path.
If only my agent was as good as Vic's, then I could release a book of total and utter ....
If only to buy it for its complete and utter stupidity.
I rest my case.

I agree with all the other reviewers so far - this book was not worth buying. I am very dissappointed as we are using Struts and I jumped at the chance to get a book on the subject. I should not have been so trigger happy with the cash, I can't believe I pre-ordered this book. It was almost a total waste of money. I did find it interesting to read some of the author's perspective on developing software, but I was really looking more for a good book about Struts, and this was not at all that.

I bought this book from the publisher and I had hoped for a book that would be a great resource for my team to learn more Struts (we have 3 applications we have developed in Struts).
Unfortunately, I discovered that this is probably one of the worst technical books I have ever purchased. It is poorly organized, badly written, and formatted so that it is unreadable.
If you want to learn about Struts, pick up Professional JSP Site Design or Professional JSP by Wrox or wait for the upcoming Struts book from O'Reilly.
Better yet, subscribe to the mailing lists, try out the samples... All of those options are cheaper and much more educational than this so called "book."

Avoid this book. I agree with the previous review, the book doesn't explain Strut's framework. As far as I can tell, this is a workbook for the publisher's (baseBeans Engineering) MVC framework classes ...
The pagination in this book is a joke, it isn't organized very well and many of the pictures in this book I recognize from other sites and white papers I have read. If you want a book that looks and reads like a seminar workbook (Extra Credit sections, WHAT??? Am I getting graded?), this is the book for you. I could go on and on... If you want to learn about Struts, wait for a real publisher like O'Reilly to come out with a book.
Manemanu
but this book could have benefited from a professional editor. And a graphical designer. And a technical reviewer.
This shockingly poor effort - which is labelled "beta edition" - looks like a draft that was rejected by every publisher in the field. The content is extremely shallow, the examples are abysmal, there are continuity errors (referring back to chapters that have yet to come), many grammatical errors, and the source code included is full of comments like "there must be a better way to do this".
This easily qualifies as the worst technical book I have ever bought - and I have got some turkeys !
SmEsH
I was one of the first ones to buy this book. I had finnished an application with Struts. I wanted to have a deeper understanding so I bought this book. What a fiasco, like somebody already mention one of the worst technical books.
It is hard to follow, talks more about databases than Struts. Next time I would not rush to buy a book and just wait for the reviews.
If you want to...upset up your boss, buy two of these books from the team budget. Then you can use the pie-chart on side 39 (Figure 6.1 - right after the half page long Chapter 5) to play darts, and the empty pages (probably left blank intentionally to gain volume) as your scoreboard.
As so I will grant this book 4 start loosing only one, as the darts board in not big enough.
