I've just finished Jonas X. Yuan's book, Liferay Portal . Systems Development and I thought I'd . My overall impression of this book is that it essentially documents the work Jonas and his team did for one of their clients.

My overall impression of this book is that it essentially documents the work Jonas and his team did for one of their clients. While it is great that their project was broad enough to generate enough material to be compiled into a book, I felt like I was reading here’s what we did on our project instead of let me teach you how to do Liferay development.

This book focuses on teaching by example. More by Jonas X. Liferay Portal 6 Enterprise Intranets. Liferay Portal Enterprise Intranets. Liferay User Interface Development.

As an open source community contributor, he has published five Liferay books from 2008 to 2012.

This book focuses on teaching by example. Every chapter provides an overview, and then dives right into hands-on examples so you can see and play with the solution in your own environment. All code samples run on both the latest Enterprise and Community releases. This book will be most useful to professional Java developers who want to build custom web sites, portals, and highly customized intranet applications using Liferay portal as a framework. This book is for Java developers, and you will get most from the book if you already work with Java but you need not have prior experience on Liferay portal. Although Liferay portal makes heavy use of open source frameworks such as Spring, Hibernate, Struts, and Lucene, no prior experience using these is assumed.

This book tries to cover too much in too little space.

I bought it to learn more about Liferay Theme Development as I am mostly a front-end developer (although I do have Java experience) but it was almost completely useless. It touched on things so briefly that I could have found the same information through googling.

If you are a seasoned java developer that is very experienced in JSR 268 portlet development, perhaps this book might be helpful, but I am still not convinced. If you are experienced enough to understand their explanations, you probably could have figured it out by doing some simple searching on the liferay forums.

It is really only a reference tool. If you need something that walks you through how things work and provides easy-to-understand explanations, this is not the book for you!

This is a nice begineer to intermediate to semi-expert level book. The book begins with a nice overview of the liferay portal system and WCM and introduction to JSR 286 portlets. The author then gradually raises the bar with more details on how to develop portlets, manage pages, and customizing the portal.

My favorite chapters of the book were the chapters on Social Office, Staging & Publishing and using common api.
Actually the social office chapter was quite a surprise. The author has given good treatment to the topics explaining them in sufficiant detail for a beginner and at the same time making it relevant to the advanced users. The author has also explained the events and hooks very well.

One more thing that I liked about the book was that the author explains how the code works out of the box and then how to customize it. I liked the "Whats happening?" sections of the book

One of the things I do not like is that there are a few sections in the book like "Using SCORM" that do not talk about the topic in detail. This raised the expectations but then quickly brought them down looking at just a few lines of explanation. However there were not a whole lot of such topics.

All in all I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get started with Liferay and get a good handle on the system.

The book is not exactly what I've expected. I hoped more for a book where you in the begining install basic Liferay portal and in each chapter add more functionality into it, e.g. in second chapter author would create portlet, third chapter modify ext, etc.. But one specific task per chapter - which would be done from begining to the end, with complete source code (bolded important/interesting parts).

I had little bit problems to orientate within that, as it was written as was. Also I found quite strange when there were parts like "create directory, create file, ..." and in the end of chapter was told "or you can simply run create.sh script and modify created files".

I liked the "Whats happening?" sections of the book, those were quite interesting. Anyway still one of best books for Liferay developers published so far :)

This book provides great insight on using Liferay and developing customized tools. It provides step-by-step tutorials that are easy to follow and gives you a hands on experience on developing with LR. In addition to tutorials, the book comes with a set of files that you can use when developing. I highly recommend this resource for anyone looking to use LR for their next portal system.

"Liferay Portal 5.2 Systems Development" ([...]) is Jonas's second book on Liferay Portal, a portal framework loved by many Web application designers and developers. Dr. Yuan has written this book to meet the demand on the part of the ever-growing Liferay fan population - The Liferay community needs more guidance in project architecture and coding as more and more Web sites have been implemented based on the Liferay Portal. It is hoped that the Liferay enthusiasts can learn more Liferay features and obtain insight into the richness and flexibility of the Liferay Portal.

When Dr. Yuan wrote this book, he had all the Java developers in mind. This book is good for Liferay development beginners, experienced Liferay developers and other Liferay enthusiasts. It illustrates in detail how to set up development environments, extend Liferay and add fun features. It has step-by-step coding instructions -- The book will benefit every reader who is interested in Liferay.

The book is divided into 12 chapters. Each chapter focuses on one topic. A chapter consists of titles and sub-titles. Short sentences are used in the book. It is thus easy for a reader to follow the logic of the book.

Many chapters are interesting. The book starts with the development of JSR-286 portlets in Liferay. It shows Liferay's standard-complied way to develop JSR-286 portlets. The book gives examples of advanced Struts portlet development. It illustrates how to write layout templates and themes in the Plugins SDK environment. Chapter 6 introduces a way to customize the FCKEditor. This chapter is a useful reference for developers who want to use the advanced features of the editor. The section of "Inserting content-rich flashes into journal articles" is a fascinating one, where Dr. Yuan talks about inserting a video queue through the FCKEditor. It explains how to add a video list into a window through the FCKEditor, a pretty cool feature to be implemented in the Liferay Portal. This, at the same time, proves that Liferay is a flexible and robust portal framework. Chapter 7 depicts the creation of Journal articles. It gives detailed procedures to produce a media-rich Web page. It is a very important chapter of the book.

The book contains description of Liferay's new products and features. In Chapter 10, the author introduces Social Office, which is a new Liferay product. It gives detailed instructions for writing themes, portlets and hooks in the Social Office application.

The book also includes tables, screen-shots and images, which make it fun to read the book.

"Liferay Portal 5.2 Systems Development" ([...]) is valuable to a Liferay developer who needs practical solution to real-life problems. It gives detailed instructions on how to extend Liferay Portal features. The book contains practical code examples for different Web functionalities. Actually you can download the source code from links provided in the book.

A reader does not have to know Liferay Portal before he reads this book. He will comprehend its content very well so far as he is a Java developer. I recommend this book as a valuable asset to all Liferay enthusiasts and Java development professionals. It is a summary of the precious experience of a Liferay expert. You will benefit a lot from the ideas presented and example code provided in the book.

A reader can easily understand the code examples in the book. When Dr. Yuan is explaining a feature, he starts with the configuration file. He then goes to the Java code. After that he talks about the JSP files -- The procedure is very well written.

Dr. Yuan has rich experience in design and implementation of Java applications. He was the architect on several projects based on Alfresco CMS. He has been the technical leader on six Web portal projects so far. All those Web projects are based on Liferay - Dr. Yuan has rich hands-on experience with Liferay Portal.

Before he wrote this book, Dr. Yuan also wrote "Liferay Portal Enterprise Intranets," which is his first book on Liferay. While his first book introduces a reader to the robust Liferay Portal, this second book of his provides readers with solutions to extending Liferay API and adding new features. This book is a great reference for me, who am a Liferay enthusiast.

On those Liferay-based projects, Dr. Yuan has worked closely with many customers, helping them architecture their Web site. He has helped the IT engineers solve a lot of their technical problems on the spot. Dr. Yuan has distilled this work experience in "Liferay Portal 5.2 Systems Development" ([...]). He also communicated closely with the Liferay engineers when he was writing this book.

Dr. Yuan is at the same time a productive author on Liferay wiki and forum. In "Liferay Portal 5.2 Systems Development" ([...]) Dr. Yuan has integrated his ideas published in the Liferay online community. He has enhanced his online works with running code in this book. When you can read a lot online about Liferay implementation, you can find real, running code in this book.

The Index part of the book is quite accurate. You can find "Asset Publisher portlet," "WCM," "Control Panel," "hooks," "Social Office" and all other important key words there. It is very helpful.

In a nutshell, Dr. Yuan has done a good job in writing "Liferay Portal 5.2 Systems Development" ([...]). It is a good complement to the existing online Liferay documentation. When Liferay's online documentation gives you comprehensive and introductory information on Liferay development, this book provides more examples and in-depth explanations. Many implementations in the book have been inspired by real-life projects. It gives insight to a professional Java developer on how much he can do with the Liferay Portal.

Because there are so many aspects about Liferay, the book cannot be exhaustive with regard to Liferay Portal development. We expect that Dr. Yuan will update the book in the near future with more examples.

I was looking for more information on using version 5.2 than was available on the web site. After getting suckered in by the editor's review, I found a book for developers currently writing portal code for Liferay.

Even at that level, I didn't see a logical presentation that would be of any help to anyone trying to get started with Liferay portals. Please see B. Larson's review of Mr. Yuan's other Liferay book.
