Apache Ant is a software tool for automating software build processes which originated from the Apache Tomcat project in early 2000. At one time (2002), Ant was the build tool used by most Java development projects. For example, most open source Java developers included build. xml files with their distribution. Because Ant made it trivial to integrate JUnit tests with the build process, Ant made it easy for willing developers to adopt test-driven development, and even extreme programming.

ANT stands for Another Neat Tool. It is a Java-based build tool from Apache. Before going into the details of Apache Ant, let us first understand why we need a build tool in the first place. Deploying the binaries to the test server. Need for a Build Tool. On an average, a developer spends a substantial amount of time doing mundane tasks like build and deployment that include: Compiling the code. Packaging the binaries. Copying the code from one location to another. To automate and simplify the above tasks, Apache Ant is useful.

I do not usually write reviews for anything unless something is exceedingly good or exceedingly bad. In this case, this book is simply a JOKE!

As a prior reviewer already stated, the text inside is large and double-spaced, but I could've lived with that if it contained quality information. The book is 267 pages long, and I didn't see the first actual ant script until page 207, and it ended at 210! The next ant script I saw again was in page 236!!

There is this little toon at the bottom 5th of every page which serves absolutely no purpose other than to take up space to make the book thicker. These space-wasting tactics are just so prevalent throughout the book, the author had to have done this on purpose.

This author talked a lot about the software build process in the industry, listed pros and cons of using ant vs. IDE, etc., and it was technical to a certain degree. If a reader could understand what the author was talking about, then the user can't possibly be a computer novice. When it came the point to write the ant scripts, the author starts babying you to type in "notepad.exe build.xml" and even shows you a graphic of the dialogue popup that gives you the option to click the Yes/No/Cancel button when notepad asks you if you wish to create a new file. All of a sudden, the author thinks the reader is an idiot! Mind you, what I just described took ONE PAGE! This author leaves no newbie detail unmentioned, and that includes every single popup and visual cues that would follow from something you type. This author is wasting book space to a superlative degree!

I bought this book to learn how to make ANT scripts. This book is a TOTAL FAILURE in achieving that. I have bought so many computer books in my lifetime, and the only reason why I bought a book which people had described to be very rudimentary was because ANT played a minor role in my job, and I just wanted to learn a little about it. Boy, did I learn little about it.

Save yourself the trouble, folks. Save your money. The author should be glad there isn't a negative rating for products, or this book's rating would be a lot less than one star.

You've been forewarned!

I have never reviewed a book before but after reading this book, I felt the need to try to prevent others from being ripped off.

I bought this book to learn about Ant scripts, how to read them, write them, and execute them. After wasting my time reading the whole book, I don't believe I can do any of those tasks proficiently. The author does explain why you should use Ant, but then he explains it again and again and again. He also tells you to go learn Java and XML again and again and again. He gives links to websites to learn those tasks; the one link that I did try was broken.

Just to give you an idea of how low quality this book is, every single page has two huge icons of an ant and a guy pointing to a chart which takes up about a 1/3 of the page. There is a section that contains a list of task names and a brief description. The descriptions are about 10 characters in length on a line before the next line starts.

In summary this 268 page book can really be compressed into about a page and you'd get more useful information via your favorite search engine. Don't throw your money away on this book!

I read excellent reviews of this book somewhere as the 'first basic level overview of Ant' but now that I scanned the entire book in about 30 minutes, I wish I had been able to find this book locally - I would have known in 20 seconds to not waste my money. It is so basic that it doesn't even cover the language in enough depth to write scripts - well, OK, except the simplistic script included in the last section. And OK, it does list the commands available in Ant, but doesn't give a single syntax clue - the exercise of actually writing an Ant script is left to the reader. It will tell you, in a long poorly formatted paragraph that CAB creates Microsoft CAB files; but again, no clue as to how you would use it in a script. God help you if you want to use Ant with your source code control system!

My guess is the formatting was done by a computer illiterate high school student - it is *that* poorly formatted.

Imagine read-

ing page after

page of poor

documenta-

tion this way.

We *do* get a half page for 'notes' at the end of each chapter.... cripes, I'd hate to think this was a school textbook anywhere that is accredited!

It goes on for pages and pages about installing Ant and Java (in the root of your C: drive, by the way). It covers how wonderful open source is, and how you can probably configure almost any modern IDE to use Ant - oh, again the exercise is left for the student. You also enjoy page after page of how to use NOTEPAD to create your very first Java program (again in the root of C: ) and then how to run these exciting programs. If you are THAT basic a programmer, start with something more easy to use - say Perl.

I've found more Ant help on the web site and in the O'Reilly book on Ant (Ant: The Definitive Guide by Steven Holzner) than in any of this book. Do yourself a favor - run, don't walk, from this book.
