Additional thanks go to Menachem Bazian for his guidance and inspiration during the writing of this book.

This book will provide a visual development foundation for those programmers moving to Visual FoxPro, but will not provide basic introductory FoxPro and database coverage for brand new users. Experienced users will find the Techniques from the Pros provide plenty of in-depth reference and examples. An additional section will cover integration with other Visual Studio larly Microsoft SQL Server.

Creating and Using Classes with Visual FoxPro. This line of code tells Visual FoxPro that you are creating a class. All code between DEFINE and ENDDEFINE relates to this class

Creating and Using Classes with Visual FoxPro. In Chapter 13, "Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming," you briefly learned some of the issues related to creating classes in Visual FoxPro. All code between DEFINE and ENDDEFINE relates to this class. lt;classname is the name of the class and

The major enhancements in this edition over the previous edition will be coverage of the Microsoft Transaction Server and integration with Microsoft SQL Server--the two most important additions in version 6. Coverage of the enhanced debugger, profiler, and Year 2000 compliance checker will also be important to this audience. The new debugger and Year 2000 checker will automate much of the tedious FoxPro debugging process from the past. This book is aimed at the experienced, professional FoxPro developer--unlike most of the competition. This book will provide a "visual development" foundation for those programmers moving to Visual FoxPro, but will not provide basic introductory FoxPro and database coverage for brand new users. Experienced users will find the "Techniques from the Pros" provide plenty of in-depth reference and examples. An additional section will cover integration with other Visual Studio applications--particularly Microsoft SQL Server.

A good, comprehensive book that all FoxPro developers should read. Even power users will find it useful. It's way too bad that Micro$oft has decided to drop this product. Blows the doors off Access. The book is well written, and gives examples for all different types of database scenarios.

Bought this so I could learn FoxPro at work. We decided to go in other directions with the project, so I had limited use of this volume. What I did experience with this text was great. Everyone is different in what works for them, but this one did it for me.

Que books usually excel by providing a well-organized presentation with a good ratio of pictures to useful text. This book is an exception.
VFP is an object-oriented language (if you don't know what that means skip down to my last paragraph) but the introduction to OOP begins on page 420. That does not stop the authors from discussing methods and properties at length in the first several hundred pages of the book. This will destroy people who have not worked in other OO languages. People who have worked in other OO languages will crave the OO details instead of procedural code with different syntaxes for doing the same thing.
The sample code snippets are terrible in that they include syntax and semantics that have not been explained. As far as I can tell there is no online version of the code or the book.
It is even worse than this because there are examples using databases and files that are not provided or described anywhere in the book.
There are large sections of the book that are totally repetitive. Other sections that are totally worthless provide cheerleading and saying things like, "Your use of the Project Manager will depend on your programming experience, your interest and your needs." (Very useful information isn't it).
Spend your money on Hentzenwerke books instead. They are wordy but not junk.

The author explains the topics with careful details. I loved it.

One reviewer here calls this book a junk. That is unfair!

I found an HTML version of the book here:

[...]

the HTML is not well done, but it will give you an idea that the book is very good.

I like to have a hard copy of the book next to me at all times, that's why I've bought it.

My favorite part of the book was chapter 17, Advanced Object-Oriented Programming. It goes into detail to explain the most important Visual FoxPro classes.

My 2 cents,

Hope That Helps!

This is not a reference book. Topics are very hard to find, and when found, do not cover the subject very well. This book is obviously meant to be read from cover to cover like a novel. You cannot program and flip through the book as a reference. I found myself picking up Miriam Liskin's "Programming Foxpro 2.0" from time to time so that I could jog my memory for some of the more basic stuff.
I bought this book through Barnes and Noble off the shelf and am returning it tonight... after finding something else here at Amazon.

Dear friends, don't use this book to solve a problem you've NOW. If you never programmed with VFP, this iS NOT the best book to buy. Read it, as a guide to understand what VFP has to give in several aspects, that other books just mentioned. Here, you have complete examples (althouth they should come on a CD-Rom) that can be VERY useful to your application. It has a little of everything, but doesn't focus too much (it's up to you find the rest of the way). But, i think it's a good book.
I agree with the other reviews. If you are a beginner with Visual FoxPro, stay away from this book. I know nothing about programming VFP, but I've done my share of programming. I've worked with BASIC, COBOL, Pascal, C and assembly. I figured I could transfer my previous programming knowledge to VFP. Not with this book! This book wouldn't even make a good reference. I suppose if you knew how to program in VFP, you might get something out of it.
