The discussion of VPN technologies as they fit with Windows 2000 is excellent. It clearly explains technical issues and provides examples to help the reader better understand the context of the technology in Windows 2000 and a VPN deployment.

This is a mediocre book. I find the style of writing somewhat confused.
Like the half dozen other books on networking and information security that I bought from New Riders over the past few years (this was definitely the last one) it makes you wonder if they employ editors at all.

My company has been developing specialty IPSec-like software for peer to peer applications in Win NT environments. We plan to support Win2000 also. I initially went through the book to learn about specific changes in Win2000. What I found was a wealth of information about VPN technology in general plus the Win2000 specifics. My approach to reviewing a book is to use the Table of Contents and the Index to search for answers to specific questions of value to my job. Here are a few results of information searches. There is a good section on the IPSec Driver and the TCP/IP Stack that includes information on NDIS layer interface and a brief mention of the use of crypto offload cards. Included in this section is a good general description of both AH and ESP including packet details for both. Another useful section covers L2TP and NAT limitations. The book covers various Server-Side and Client-Side network designs and includes numerous screen shots and detail descriptions of Win2000 setup screens. This is a good book for learning generic VPN fundamentals in addition to Win2000 specifics. It will be useful to administrators, network designers, and anyone else interested in VPN technology.

We are a small company that is deploying Windows 2000 as our VPN solution and had been having problems understanding all of the issues with the deployment. This book puts it all together and explains the whole picture of how the deployment should work. I particularly found the chapter of Proxy and NAT information helpful. I have NEVER seen a book the explains all of the issues and basic differences between different types of connection sharing devices.
Also, the book covers about 20 different designs of how you can put together your network with both the tunnel server and the home LANs (a lot of my users have home LANs). It is neat how Thaddeus did not try to tell the reader how they should do it, but rather lists the advantages and disadvantages of each.
I cannot recommend this book enough!
Thank you.

This is a very practical book. Which is wonderful if that's what you are looking for. There are other books with better theoretical discussions of what IPSec is. But few books are as helpful in getting IPSec to actually work in a Windows 2000 environment. I found it very helpful in setting up a few Windows 2000 VPN servers.

I reviewed this book before it went to press and thought it was excellent. I received a copy of the finished book and have already used it on many occasions to help configure Windows 2000 VPNs. This book is not for those looking to learn about VPN technologies, but for those looking to implement VPN services on Windows 2000. It provides detailed step-by-step configuration instructions and I highly recommend it.

This is a great book that gives you step-by-step instructions on how to implement and manage a successful VPN solution. It covers all the necessary areas like architecture, planning and designing of VPN's in a Windows 2000 environment. This book is perfect for administrators, consultants and industry experts.

If you're searching for a book on VPN technologies within the Windows 2000 environment, this book is a must read. The author did a great job explaining real-world approaches to implementing VPNs under different business needs and requirements. I found the book easy to read and well structured, with each chapters devoting in-depth discussions to different aspects of VPN.
This book is a must read for anyone who needs to have a basic understanding of VPNs and a must keep for any administrator or designer intending to implement VPNs in Windows 2000. There is enough information to guide you through a full analysis, from security risks to alternative solutions, and all the way to obtaining a cost-effective solution.
